Mint your own
More than one way to make money
Many of us dream of minting our own money but very few manage it. However, Dean Brynildsen, a Fishermen's member recently brought in proof to show how his father did just that . . . made Brynildsen coins! Brynild Brynildsen, Dean's father, settled in Bella Coola in 1894 and he and his young bride, Mattie Marie, were the first white couple to be married there. They started trading in Bella Coola in 1896 and among the many other difficulties they encountered during those pioneering days was the chronic shortage of official currency. The remoteness of the area and the difficulties of travel caused coinage to suffer from poor circulation.
In order to keep the wheels of commerce turning, Brynild went to the Royal Mint in Ottawa to produce coins of his own design. These were redeemable at the Brynildsen store only, of course, and soon became commonplace in the area. They were in the pockets and purses of all the early settlers and the Indian population in quick time.
There are not many examples of private coinage being produced in recent years and the Brynildsen coins have now become a collector's item. Many unique achievements have been credited to early Canadians but not too many have managed to make money this way.
The face of the coins read "Good for 50c in trade" and were in various denominations. The reverse side carried the information "B. Brynildsen & Coy. Dealers in General Merchandise and Furs, Bella Coola, B.C."
PRIVATE COINS circulated in the Bella Coola area early in 1900's now collector items.

SHOWERS FORECAST
Aside from the showers that "bring forth May flowers", we are apt to think of showers in terms of a party for the bride-to-be. Nowadays it may be also a combined shower for the engaged couple, a mother-to-be, or someone going on an extensive trip.
The pertinent question of any hostess is "what shall I serve?" One suggestion I favor is this Pineapple Cheese Party Salad. The colored miniature marsh-mallows combined with the cheese and pineapple in the bottom layer topped with a thin layer of clear jelly makes this a very colorful and delicious salad. There is no fussing with individual molds —it is made in one pan and cut in squares to serve on lettuce. For accompaniment just pass small hot buttered rolls or baking powder biscuits. For larger quantities, it is a simple matter to double or triple the recipe and mold in extra pans of the same size.
PINEAPPLE CHEESE PARTY SALAD
1 package lemon flavored gelatine IV2 cups boiling water
1 package (4 oz.) cream cheese, cut fine l cup mayonnaise 212 cups colored miniature marshmallows 1 can (10 oz.) crushed pineapple, well drained
1 cup whipping cream, whipped
1 package orange or lime flavored gelatine
2 cups boiling water
Dissolve lemon jelly powder in boiling water. Chill. When beginning to set stir in mayonnaise, then fold in marshmallows, pineapple and whipped cream. Spread into 7" x 11" baking pan. Chill. Make orange or lime flavored jelly. When beginning to thicken, pour over first layer. Chill. Makes 8 generous or 10 smaller servings.
