NDP pledged to establish provincial fisheries dep't
"A New Democratic government in B.C. would establish a provincial fisheries department as the first essential step toward elevating a key resource industry from the rut of neglect where it's been placed by successive Social Credit governments," Carl Liden assured The Fisherman this week.
Liden, a former UFAWU organizer and northern repre sentative, is the NDP candidate for Delta, the constituency in which he was a strong contender in the 1969 provincial election.
Currently working as administrator of the B.C. Laborers' Medical and Benefit Plan, the 43-year old New Democrat has a background of practical experience in the fishing industry as seiner, gillnetter and tenderman.
"The main concern of a provincial fisheries department," he explained, "would be conservation and development of this vital resource.
"This would mean that adequate regulations would be enforced to protect fisheries from the effects of thoughtless logging, mining and other industrial practices.
"On the broader international front, an NDP provincial fisheries department would take the lead in pressing for an all-inclusive North Pacific fisheries treaty. And it would advocate extending Canadian fishing limits to encompass the continental shelf."
Dealing with legislation affecting organized working people, Liden calls for the removal of all restrictive laws introduced in recent years to hamstring the trade union movement.
"Working men and women in this province too often have felt the heavy hand of government inter vention on behalf of big business. The type of compulsion injected into labor-management affairs by the Socreds is simply not accept able."
Liden also proposes that provincial elections be held regularly every four years at a

time least inconvenient for the majority of citizens.
"Time and again," he points out, "the Socred choice of an election date has served to disfranchise many working people and this year is no exception. It will be difficult for many fishermen in particular to participate in this election."
Recalling that in the 1969 provincial election fishermen contributed some $1,000 to his campaign fund, Liden has issued a renewed plea for support in his current bid to wrest the Delta riding from Robert Wenman, the incumbent Socred MLA.
"Because it's a people's organization which — unlike the other three old line parties — neither receives nor seeks support from corporations, the NDP is always short of funds," he pointed out.
"Our only source of support is among ordinary men and women whose interests we would serve as the government."
Contribution sheets on behalf of Liden's campaign already are circulating in the industry. Donations should be sent to the Carl Liden Election Campaign in care of Fishermen's Hall, 138 East Cordova Street, Vancouver 4.
