Herring boosts March figures
Herring and dogfish catches dominated production in the B.C. fishing industry in March and boosted landed values to $9.2 million, a $7 million increase over the corresponding month of 1972.
Landed value of these two species accounted for 96 percent of total returns to fishermen, according to the Fisheries Service's preliminary catch figures.
The catch of herring for food purposes was 48,000 tons with a landed value of $7,194,000, 68 percent more in volume and 300 percent more in landed value than in March of 1972.
The cumulative season's cati... of herring in poundage to the end of the month was 102,303,000 pounds with a landed value of $7,402,000, compared with 59,986,000 pounds worth $1,875,000 to fishermen at the same date in 1972.
Dogfish catches during the month totalled 5,243,000 pounds with a landed value of $1,616,000, bringing the cumulative dogfish catch for the season to 8,240,000 pounds with a landed value of $1,735,000.
Groundfish deliveries were down from a year earlier, grey cod landings declining to 970,000 pounds with a landed value of $100,000 from 2,100,000 pounds with a landed value of $186,000 in March of 1972."
Sole landings totalled 110,000 pounds valued at $12,000, red and rock cod catches amounted to 107,000 pounds valued at $9,000 and ling cod deliveries stood at 57,000 pounds with a landed value of $13,000.
