Compounds remain
Oil spill mopping up may not be enough
SASKATOON — It seems there may be more to controlling oil pollution than simpiy mopping up spills from bodies of water . . . that the chemistry of oil pollution is a whole lot more complicated than most people thought.
Researchers at Saskatchewan University's chemistry and chemical engineering department have identified 10 chemical compounds that remain dissolved in water after crude oil has been shaken up with it and then removed. This raises questions about the effectiveness of mopping up spills, say the researchers.
On the other hand, it may open the possibility of "finger-painting" different crude oils so that the source of spills can readily be identified.
Research has been going on for the past three years supported by grants from the federal environment department.
Some compounds left behind by oil form emulsions with the water and finally settle out. Others dissolve in fresh and salt water and remain in solution.
The 10 identified in the research are known as "aromatic" compounds and include benzene and its derivatives. Other studies have shown that at sufficient levels and with long exposure, some of these compounds will kill fish. Research showed that if two parts of oil are added to 100 parts of water and stirred for one day, the proportion of soluble compounds to water after the oil is removed will be about one part per million.
Jean Pierre Daem is a biology professor at British Columbia's Simon Fraser University. He is . currently researching the long-term effects on fish of sublethal doses of oil and oil pollutants. "As long as people see fish alive they think they're alright," he commented.
The spectacular affects of a major oil spill are well known The more subtle effects are even more insidious. Daem says it has been proven that migrating fish
find their way to their home river by scent. "Any spill will affect the biochemical scent of the river— the chances are that migrating fish won't recognize their stream."
Emphasizing the findings of the Saskatoon researchers, he says, some soluble breakdown products from oil are toxic and "pretty dangerous to fish."
Oil will follow ocean current, as fish do. All food chains in the sea find their way back to the phyto-planktyon and zooplankton, minute specks of plant and animal life that exist in unimaginable numbers. If these are contaminated — "almost everything can go wrong with the whole chain," Daem asserts.
