An extensive and lengthy search by Hawaiian authorities has failed to disclose any clue to the fate of UFAWU fisherman Alfred Herman Remmem, who was last seen on December 1 before he went for a walk along a Maui beach.
It is assumed that he was caught in a heavy surf and swept out to sea. He suffered a heart attack last September and had been vacationing with his wife Enyd in Hawaii since November.
Born in Annieville 58 years ago, he started gillnetting on the Fraser River as a youth and during his long career had fished herring and halibut as well as salmon, working aboard such vessels as the Western Dispatch and Western Girl. He also packed salmon on the Western Princess.
He joined the UFAWU in 1948 and was a member of its New Westminster Local.
He had learned boat building and repair from his father and some 12 years ago he went into partnership with his brother Harold in establishing Remmem Boat Workers on Annieville Slough.
For a few years he continued to fish, building his last vessel, the troller Cayman Isle, nine years ago.
In addition to his wife Enyd, he is survived by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Joan Wilson of New Westminster; his parents, Mr.

polluting the once blue coastal waters of the northern Mediterranean with industrial waste known as "red mud".
The Montedison chemical plant is accused of dumping 3,000 tons of poisonous titanium Dioxide into the straits between Italy and the French island of Corsica.
The trial follows demonstrations on Corsica and several protest bombings of Corsica-Italy ferries.
The defendents are charged as accomplices in a "criminal scheme of damaging the biological resources of the Tyrrhenian and Ligurian sea coasts."
The Corsican fishing and tourist industries have been protesting for several years against fish kills and spoilage of picturesque island beaches.
At most, convictions of the company executives and the ships' captains who transported the waste, mean fines or light jail sentences of up to three months.
