Howard denounces 'thievery'
Weston's profits rise 86 percent
OTTAWA — Describing the .profiteering of the food monopolies as "thievery," Frank Howard (NDP, Skeena) told the House of Commons last week that the competition bill before the parliament was ineffective in protecting consumers from the food processing industry.
"I want to refer to the profit position of food processors in this land," Howard declared. "If thievery has taken place, it has certainly taken place here."
Howard filled in the profit picture of a number of food processors for 1973 as compared with 1972.
"J. M. Schneider increased its profits in that one year by 35 percent," he reported. "H. J. Heinz was a poor outfit, with only a 14 percent increase. Dominion
Environment body set up
VICTORIA — Highways minister Graham Lea and Recreation and Conservation minister Jack Radford announced recently that an environmental liaison committee has been set up between their departments.
Organized at the associate deputy minister level, the committee will work towards closer liaison between the highways department and the fish and wildlife and parks branches of the recreation and conservation department. Covering all aspects of the planning, design, construction and maintenance of highways, the committee will ensure maximum protection of wildlife and its habitat and reduction of environmental damage, particularly in Provincial Parks.
The committee will strengthen and extend existing liaison with other environmental agencies. These include Environment Canada, the water resources service of the lands, forests and water resources department, and the provincial Archaeological Advisory Board.

Dairies, probably one of the groups we have been subsidizing through the milk subsidy program, had 32 percent; Canada Packers, 36 percent; Canadian Canners, 33 percent; George Weston, 86percent; Burns Foods, 28 percent; B.C. Sugar Refinery, 50 percent; Maple Leaf Mills, another food processor to whom we have been paying a subsidy for flour, 150 percent increase in profits; Silverwood Industries, 83 percent."
These companies, he noted, "were the beneficiaries of the reduction in the corporation tax from 47 to 40 percent.
"Did these companies increase the number of their employees? Not from any look at the statistics. Did they build new plants? Not that anybody can find out. They stuck these profits in their pockets, a gift from the Canadian taxpayer.
"Not only did we give George Weston an 86 percent increase in profits, but we said things were so bad that we would cut the percentage of income tax the company would pay on top of that."
