Seine meet asks safety seminar
Safety aboard seine vessels was discussed at length when delegates of five UFAWU locals gathered in Vancouver June 10 for a salmon seine conference.
A request is going from the conference to the union's general executive board to call a coast-wide safety seminar at the erfd of the salmon season. The seminar, which conference delegates envision being held in conjunction with a second seine conference, would deal with pressing safety matters such as vessel stability, proper clothing, noise levels aboard vessels, use of life rafts and instruction of new fishermen in safety procedures.
In the meantime a letter will go to the Fisheries' Association's safety committee requesting re-institution of safety education courses the association proposed earlier.
Federal authorities are to be asked to bar from fishing those too young to receive workmen's compensation benefits.
The conference outlined seine clearance policy to be recommended to all union locals.
Job preference will be awarded first to those who have fished or paid union dues during the previous two years.
When the list of job applicants in that category drops below 25, second job preference will go to union members who have not
fished or paid dues for the past two years. When the combined list of persons in these two categories drops below 25, vessel owners and immediate relatives of fishermen will have job preference. When the combined list of persons in these three categories falls below 25, new members will be accepted into the union.
"The union, of course, reserves the right to refuse membership to persons considered hostile to the best interests of the rest of the membership," added Vancouver waterfront organizer and chairman of the conference, John Ra-dosevic Jr.
The conference also passed a resolution, to be forwarded to all locals, ca ''ng for five-man seine crews in ^s other than Area 20, with tfc Iso that the locals concernet .„ay make special decisions allowing reduction of the crew complement. Crews in Area 20 will consist of six men, with the same proviso applying in special •cases.
Each local will be asked, the conference decided, to clear only those vessels which would normally clear through that local, and vessels whose crews reside mainly within the jurisdiction of that local. "This ruling would apply especially in cases where new membership applications are involved," Radosevic explained.

• A shambles this may appear, but it is the scene, nonetheless, of a minor victory won by UFAWU Prince Rupert staff. For years Canadian Fishing Company used this location along the Skeena slough for winter storage of fishing boats. Disrepair had made the place a hazard, and when the company showed reluctance to do the necessary repairs, the union went to the Workers' Compensation Board, which quickly condemned the place for further use.
