New UFA WU vessel
George Miller sets out
With a blustery, two-day patrol through the Area 17 and lower east coast roe herring fishery in mid-March behind her, the 48-foot George Miller has commenced her career as new organizing vessel for the UFAWU.
The voyage from Sather Boat Works in Queensboro — where she slid into the water in the predawn of January 29 — and sea trials off Vancouver completed earlier, the moulded fiberglass vessel now is on the ways at Benson Bros, in Coal Harbor for minor refitting.
For the past year or more the vessel has been the special concern of a boat committee selected by the union's general executive board and headed by its Fraser Valley organizer Bill Procopation.
In an era of planing hulls, the inadequate speed of the Chiquita 3, whose quarter century as organizing vessel forms an important chapter in the union's 31-year history, was a prime factor when the decision to replace her finally was taken.
Procopation proudly reported
the new vessel's success during her trials:
"At that time she attained a top speed of 17.3 knots. Since then more pitch has been put in the propellers, giving the vessel a sustained cruising speed in excess of 16 knots.
"This is an excellently-built and comfortable vessel which, more importantly, will cut travelling time in half and allow organizers more time on the grounds in areas of fleet concentration."
The 17-layer moulded fibre-glass planing hull was delivered to Sather Boat Works from ICL Engineering in Richmond early last summer and the lengthy wait that followed from then until entry into the Fraser attests only to the care taken in her completion.
She is powered by two Cummins diesels supplied by Cummins Diesel Sales of B.C. Ltd. and governed to develop a total of 612 hp.
Her auxiliary is a Ferryman diesel, supplied, along with Consta-Volt unit by Simpson
Power Products of Burnaby and developing four kilowatts of power.
