Sign-up on El slated Jan. 6,7
Two new Employment Insurance sign-up days have been set for January, 1997, to assist fishermen who become eligible for benefits under new rules taking effect Jan. 5.
Fishermen can file claims Jan. 6 and 7 at the Steveston Buddhist Church, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those with an even number in the last three digits of the social insurance number should go on Jan. 6, and those with an odd number on Jan. 7.
The new Employment Insurance regulations, which change the eligibility for fishing claims from insurable weeks to insurable income, kick in Jan. 5. Under the

transitional regulations covering the last few months of 1996, fishermen who didn't have enough weeks to file a claim in 1996, may be able to file a claim after Jan. 5.
In the Lower Mainland, fishermen must have at least $4,200 fishing income over the previous 31 weeks and at least six weeks fishing (since the maximum income that will be calculated for 1996 is $750 a week) in order to qualify.
To calculate benefits, EI officers will first take the season income and divide it by a divisor determined by the regional rate of unemployment (19 in the Lower Mainland). That figure is then multiplied by 5 5 per cent to establish the benefit rate. For example, eight weeks of fishing at the maximum $750 a week would produce an insurable income of $6,000. Divided by 19 and then multiplied by 55 percent, it produces a weekly benefit of $174.
What a great idea!
