problem," Nichol said. "The fact is they can produce that fish and sell it at a profit and still give reasonable increases to the workers in this industry. The market is there."
Both Nichol and Procopation noted that the cost of transporting salmon to B.C. pushes the final cost of the fish far above demands now on the table by fishermen.
"The companies now are anxious to import Alaska fish to B.C.," Nichol said, "so they can use the Canadian label and reap the rewards of our high quality reputation.
"But the strike votes are a
warning that we will not tolerate the importation of Alaska fish prices and wage conditions."
Meanwhile, the "botulism scare" which Fisheries Association bargainers claim has destroyed foreign markets is evaporating.
Fisheries field director Don Wilson confirmed July 9 that New Zealand has lifted its warning on Canadian salmon and advised consumers they can buy in confidence.
Canadian inspection teams in Australia are close to winning similar co-operation from authorities there, Wilson said, where the production of Quality Fish and Oakland Fisheries has been held up.

lines are established in Australia, production there will be ready to go back on the shelves when state authorities give final approval.
Wilson said discussions are continuing with British health authorities to obtain removal of the warning imposed on half-pound cans of Canadian salmon. "We expect an announcement by the end of the month."
Wilson said he has received personal correspondence indicating all other sizes of canned salmon remain on the shelves. He also has learned that some brokers did not withdraw even the half-pound cans as authorities requested.
Finally, the monster Bristol Bay sockeye run which was forecast to meet or exceed last year's record harvest, appears to be returning much weaker than was predicted. Final catches could be down 30 percent from the 29 million fish Alaska officials thought would be harvested. The decline substantially reduces sockeye supplies which company spokesmen claimed would depress prices.

main unchanged: sockeye, $1.50; pinks, 65 cents; chums, $1.02; large red springs, $2.25; small springs, $1.20; coho, $1.00; and white springs, $1.02.
Procopation said the offer was a direct insult and an attempt to impose Alaska conditions in B.C. Alaska sockeye costs 50 to 60 cents a pound to transport south, he said, meaning the companies already expect to pay up to $1.40 for Bristol Bay production.
"They are asking us to fish for less than the Alaska price. We have no mandate to negotiate a two-price system for any fish and we believe that under current market conditions, the roe in chums is paying their costs."
