The economic crisis cannot be allowed to deflect the UFAWU from the struggle for full equality for women in the fishing industry, union convention delegates agreed Feb. 10.
"Women's rights are part of workers' rights," northern representative Joy Thorkelson said, "and as long as there is sexual discrimination on the job, the union is weaker."
The convention adopted a series of resolutions pledging the union to step up its pressure for elimination of discrimination through plant action and at the bargaining table.
"As long as one section of the working class has fewer rights, it's like an army," Thorkelson

said. "It can only march as fast as the slowest person."
Joe Lovesar, a Prince Rupert shoreworker, told the convention he is behind the women 100 percent. He pointed out during the war, women did the jobs men now do and today some of the older men can't do some of the jobs they are assigned to.
Vancouver shore organizer Helen O'Shaughnessy said equal pay in the plants will come because, "more and more women are getting fed up with unequal pay."
Another shoreworker said there was little support from the men in her plant to win this battle, making it very difficult.
"The men made it sound like we're taking the money out of their pocket," she said. "I'd like to see some further education of the men in the union so they see

women support families just like they do."
Local 8 delegate Morris Anderson said women need equal pay, but more than that they need equal opportunity to learn skills and trades.
Mickey Beagle, an auxiliary delegate and former union organizer said all jobs are essential in the plant regardless of whether they are light or heavy.
She warned the delegates not to see it as solely a division between men and women because "you have big women who could do heavy work and some smaller men who should be doing light work.
Delegates also agreed locals should take action to set up women's rights committees in order to continue to educate the membership about the equal rights issue.

Except for a short period during the mid-forties when he went back to Norway, he fished halibut, herring and in later years, salmon.
In 1951, he entered his second marriage and moved from Prince Rupert to Vancouver, transferring out of the Deep Sea Fishermen's Union to the UFAWU.
A stroke ended his fishing career in 1967, but both he and his wife remained active in the UFAWU seniors club.
He is survived by his wife Stella, a brother Knut, also a retired fisherman, and one daughter from a previous marriage in Norway. He also leaves five grandchildren and two great grandaughters in Norway.
Jack Scott
Alert Bay fishermen are mourning the loss of another veteran union member and fisherman with the passing Feb. 1 of Jack Scott, a gillnetter whose fishing career stretched back to the war years.
Born in 1925, Scott's first union number was a low 3020, indicating his early allegiance to trade unionism in the fishing industry. He was a paid-up member of the UFAWU at the time of his death. He died after a lengthy illness.
After some experience trolling and seining, he turned to gillnet-ting in the 1950s. For many years he fished the Sea K 2.
He is survived by his wife Verna Sareth, stepson Paddy Hinton, and a brother. Funeral service was held Feb. 4 in Alert Bay.
