Labor rallies to save Ul Action Centres
The B.C. labor movement is rallying
to save a number of unemployment action centres threatened with closure around the province.
, The B.C. Federation of Labour h?s finally succumbed to finan-£'al pressures and will cease funding unemployed action centres in the near future.
The five-year-old program, which saw more than 17 centres a.t its peak has been suffering since federal funding was withdrawn several years ago. p Not all centres will close. In prince Rupert and Vancouver, '°cal labor councils have vowed t° continue the centres and are appealing to unions to continue the funding.
In other areas unions are doing the same in an attempt to ensure the centres remain a place for the ^employed to get help. , "It is absolutely vital for the jabor movement we do everything we can to insure the centres stay open," Jack Nichol told t"e March 18 meeting of the Vancouver and District Labor Council. "These centres were set UP not only to help the unemployed with UIC problems, but t° do a political job."
Nichol called for all unions Which have been contributing to the federation's fund to transfer the money directly to the action centre in their area. He pledged the UFAWU would continue to Provide regular support to the centres.
The UFAWU donates the hall space in Prince Rupert and Local dl agreed to a $150 a month Srant to help cover operating costs.
The program was launched in 1982 and grew quickly to cover ?Very major centre in the prov-•nce. In Vancouver the centre was originally started by shore-Workers trying to assist other
shoreworkers with UIC problems. The program expanded to include all workers who needed help. Until the Fishermen's Hall was sold, the centre was located there.
B.C. Fed secretary-treasurer Cliff Andstein said financial support for the centres from the union movement became more difficult because of the tough situation unions and all working people are facing.
"We must not lose sight of the fact that it is the government and the corporations that are responsible for the high unemployment rate and the hundreds of thousands of people in British Columbia who are on social assistance or unemployment insurance," Andstein said. "It is the government and the corporations that are responsible for the shutdowns, layoffs, cutbacks in social services and reductions in real wages.
"The trade union movement in this province will continue to assist people when and where it can," he added. "We will continue to put forward our economic alternatives and our plans for job creation."
