8 • THE FISHERMAN / JUNE 17,1988
• Construction workers and supporters from other unions staged a 32-hour occupation of the Industrial Relations Council on June 1. Above, Gary Campbell reads the newspaper while the trade unionists wait for IRC boss Ed Peck to arrive.
Workers occupy IRC office to demand fair treatment
When angry construction workers showed up for a meeting with the province's top labour bureaucrat Ed Peck and discovered him gone — they decided to stay.
Thus began the 32 hour occupation of the Industrial Relations Council on Howe Street which ended with promises of action on outstanding grievances.
Besides finally getting a meeting with Peck, the construction workers complaints about employer biased decisions and foot
dragging by the IRC received widespread publicity.
The cases of particular concern involve certification and decertification votes in the construction industry, where the non-union work force is growing.
B.C. and Yukon Building Trades president Len Werden charged the IRC has been systematically ignoring appeals from unions, but granting quick action for construction firms.
During the occupation no police or security cops made any
attempt to remove the construction workers.
The sit-in began on June 1, the first anniversary of the one-day general strike called by the B.C. Federation of Labour to protest Bill 19.
Werden told reporters that the building trades had not shifted from its position that the Social Credit government designed Bill 19 to rid the province of strong unions.
"The board (IRC) was set up to destroy trade unionism in this province," Werden said.
