DRY HEAT
There is nothing that beats the cosy dry heat from a Dickinson diesel heater.
Dickinson stainless steel heaters come in wall mounted or freestanding models that deliver from 5,000 to 16,250 BTU's. Plenty to keep you warm and dry Dry because Dickinson heaters take moisture out of the air, reducing condensation, creating a warm, cosy atmosphere.
Ask about our stoves - they're diesel too, the same fuel that runs your engine.
There's a Dickinson dealer near you. Call for a brochure and all the facts on dry heat for your boat.

Hearing impairment can be prevented
By ALANNA LANTELA
Do you think your hearing is good, or are you losing it? Do sounds become muffled and lose their clarity? Do you experience ringing in the ears?
If you are noticing these things and you work in a fish plant or on a boat, then you are being over-exposed to noise. This will gradually lead to hearing loss.
The most effective way to reduce noise is to get rid of the noise source or use a less noisy process. Newer machines and engines are being designed to produce less noise but this takes time to change.
Another way is to muffle the noise with enclosures and insulation. Fishermen can decrease engine noise by using proper engine mounts that reduce vibration or by using lead sheeting between layers of acoustical fiberglass or acoustical foam to absorb the sound.
Finally, you can decrease your exposure to noise by using hearing protection such as earplugs or earmuffs. What counts is using the hearing protection. Wear what is comfortable for you and wear it any time you are exposed to loud noise. In the shore plants, earplugs and ear-muffs should be available to all workers.
If you think you are suffering from hearing loss, have a hearing test done. Most shoreworkers are working under noisy conditions and employers are required to provide for an annual hearing test.
Fishermen should contact their doctors to arrange a test with a specialist. You can get compensation for work-induced hearing loss and it should be reported to the Workers' Compensation Board.
But most important, remember to use hearing protection to prevent injury in the first place.
Ozone safety guidelines set rules for proper use
Ozone, used to purify water, can irritate mucous membranes and lungs, and may cause premature aging. Its use in fish plants and on fishing boats has led the Workers' Compensation Board to draft safety rules for working around ozone.
At a meeting May 8 of company and worker representatives, along with ozone generator suppliers, the WCB outlined draft guidelines that will standardize use and ensure proper monitoring of ozone levels.
Workers at J.S. McMillan Ltd. complained last fall of headaches and dizziness from the improper use of ozone on the fresh fish line. That protest eventually led to the machine's removal from the
plant pending proper safety guidelines.
UFAWU safety director Alan-na Lantela says that many fishing boats and packers are using ozone machines and the dangers are largely unknown. She said that on smaller boats the ozone generator is sometimes installed in the galley or even in a stateroom rather than in an enclosed space as required in the WCB guidelines.
All ozone generators must now be installed with proper ozone monitors to check for unsafe ozone levels. And the ozone must be pumped into the water system in an enclosed reaction tank away from any workers.
