• SOME PACKERS HAVE BEEN SAILING WITHOUT PAY because of company policy that they will only be paid from 24 hours before an actual opening.
Tendermen fight contract erosion
Tendermen say that some companies' practice of only paying packer crews from 24 hours before an opening is endangering lives and violating the agreement.
"If boats have to leave early to make sure they get to the grounds safely by travelling in good weather, they should be paid for it," said UFAWU secretary treasurer John Radosevic. "The final responsibility for sailing is with the captain and a boat's sailing must not be dictated by the fact that the crew is not paid until the final 24 hours."
Following the reluctance of the companies to come promptly to the table to deal with outstanding grievances, the union has taken some cases to binding arbitration. The grievance against the Western Wind was used as an example.
"The results of that one are
still up in the air," said tender-man Ken Robinson." But by going to arbitration, it has given some companies the idea that maybe grievances should be dealt with early or grievances will be dealt with in court."
Robinson said that the tendermen at the meeting agreed to strike a steering committee of eight in town members and four out of town members to promote better communication within the tendermen's membership.
The committee will prepare a referendum to go to the coast-wide membership to discuss the future of the tendermen's local. "The question is, do we form a coast-wide tendermen's local?" said Robinson. "Or do we stay with the current Local 10 membership steered by the 8 man committee working with the 4 man out of town committee?"
