CROCODILE TEARS H4VE BEEN SHED
We quote from the Vancouver Province of July 13th:
"Although the fishermen were fishing at the 7^-. cents price, it was felt that this amount did not give then a chance at good wages this year. Some of the fish |were running as low as three pounds. Canning operators maintained they were not in a position to pay eight cents a fish, but agreed the price was necessary to give the-fishermen fair wages this year."
Why.this sudden concern for the welfare of the-fishermen? Has the canned salmon section of the Canadian Manufacturers' Association suddenly become fired with glorious ideals, or are they afraid that with the poor run of fish this year, and with the fishermen making very little, dissatisfaction r.:y nature and take a form that is always hideous to these big moguls, united action?
These ;'ch?ritcble" people know as well as we know that the reason for the small run of fish is that you can't keep on taking the big fish year upon year and expect the small'fish to produce more big fx sh.
Small fish spawn small fish. Conservation is needed if we are to preserve our fisheries. If we allow the present haphazard policy to continue there will soon be no more fish.
Those who can afford it most, the big cannery operators, must be taxed for this work.
It is the ruthless, prof it-grabbing policy of these operators that is responsible for the poor run of fish.
The fishermen who fish for a living are the only ones who can change this condition of affairs. They must build their unions and associations and forge unity. They must fight for a decent living wage and force the cannery operators to spend 'some of their huge profits in conservation work, under supervision of the Department of Fisheries.
