rac« and is the scourge of Nature. Look st any part of the world where white men have imposed themselves and driven out the dark races who lived there for countless generations.
Take North America. Where are the forests and the wide plains? Where are the wild birds and animals? The fish in the ,water, and in some cases the water itself?
Look at your own mountain sides. iThere used to be timber on all of them. iNow there is bare rocks or brush.
Look at the Selmon! I should say, hook for the salmon. Some fifty to sixty lyears ago, the streams and inlets were (literally choked with Salmon. Now we are jafraid they will disappear altogether.
Why? The answer is the same as it is to most questions concerning white men. Greed! The desire for -tore wealth and power.
When the Indians lived here and made a living for themselves aid let it go at that, even though their methods of producing end preserving food were primitive, the country provided a living end there wes no noticeable change in conditions due to their presence. In fect they were c pert of the scheme of thin:£ rs Nature aid Nfture's God mede it.
Then came the white man. He wasn't sctisfied to mrke r living for himself. He must hrve profit. Hence, Crnneries, Sew-mills, ate, c'p ble of producing enough canned fish rnd lumber to supply hclf the world.
Sven when the visible supply of fish and timber is nearly gone, he don't try to do anything rbout it, that will intorfere with profit.
T£ke Srlmon. We have 8 sockeye Commission headed by s nan who has made, and expects to ma::e, a lot of money out of fish. Do you think for a minute he is going to do or allow to he done anything about fish conservation thit will interfere with profit? The fish will last a while longer anyway. When they're gone - well, we'll see.
Take timber. Go to any Camp or sawmill end see how it ie done. Speed! Speed? and more epeedi Never mind a few arms or lege or lives. There ere lots of timber beests. We can get some more when we kill off or maim the present supply.
You don't Leer much about reforestation though. Hor about meesures to preserve the present supply of timber.
The way the herring seine deal was handled by the Fisheries Dept. gives us more food for thought.
PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISERS -. AND. WHEN DOING SC. DON'T FORGET TO SAY: "I fUB YOUR AD IN 'TEDS FISHERMAN?"
First they told us there would be no permit issued and that the price er set by the gillnetters for bait herring war fair.
Then when the license was issued they tcld us that it was legal only, as long er the bait was given to the dog. fishermen free.
Then, that it was legal ss long as it was sold to their own fisher ien. Then that the price wes so high that the reduction plant operators could not pay it.
Then that the price did not enter into the matter at all.
To add it all up, it looks to me the answer ic for the fishermen to get well enough organized to force Justice by united politicel action.
