Force Floating Cannery To Tie Up At Dock
SEATTLE.—An attempted bit of employer chiseling on the part of the Far North Shipping and Packing Company was neatly foiled by the District Council here today. This firm operates a small floating cannery by the name of the "Commander." This vessel has been dodging us for nearly two weeks, being reported at first one place, and the another, as it. loaded supplies and equipment. It has no agreements with any organizations.
Today it shifted to the American Can Company docks. The Co-ordinating Strategy Committee immediately established a picket line. The longshoremen refused to go through the picket line.
At once the officials of the company got busy, and began hurriedly negotiating agreements with the UFU, AFU, MC&S and the MFOW, the latter organization cooperating with us in this action.
At the time • this goes to press the vessel is still idling alongside the can dock and negotiations are being rushed to a conclusion.

Wages Get Lift In New Zealand
Steady Rise In Last Three Years
AUCKLAND, N.Z. — Addressing the Federation of Labor Conference, Mr. Nash, New Zealand Minister of Finance, said that wages in New Zealand had increased by thirty-three million pounds during the past three years.
The Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, in emphasising that industry must help to fill the gap in the flow, of goods, caused by the policy of restricted imports, said, "Your standards of living do not come out of the banks, but from the fields and workshops."
The Conference later approved the creation of a National Industrial Council of Labor, which will investigate all major disputes.

Progress Being Made In Alaska Struggle
SEATTLE.—Favorable progress continues in the struggle of the Maritime Federation's aggressive action against the Canned Salmon Industry in behalf of its affiliates seeking agreements with the industry.
The Alaska Fishermen's Union last week concluded negotiations and signed agreements with the packers operating in Southeastern Alaska, winning concessions in working conditions and a 5 per cent wage increase as they had with the packers operating in Southwestern Alaska and Cooks Inlet the week before. This organizations has now signed agreements with practically the entire industry.
The provincial department of labor has replied to a request for legislation providing for improved work and wage standards for BC seamen. The department intimates that the federal govern-men is responsible for supervision of conditions in that industry. The Inland Boatmen and the Trades Council executive will confer in efforts to get federal action toward the establishment of the eight-hour day in the industry.
