Preparing For Fall And Winter Work
Members of the Women's Auxiliary are preparing to go on with their fall and winter season's work regardless of the war. Thank goodness the submarines can't chase all the fish out of the oceans. Fish is one of our most important foodstuffs and our menfolk are just as important to Canada in war as in peace times. So the women in our auxiliaries, like some of the progressive business people, will carry on with "business as usual."
Our children are back to school and we can notice a larger attendance at our meetings. Our next meeting will be held at 1179 Commercial Drive on Tuesday, October 3, at 2 p.m. This will take the form of a "social and whist." Tea will be served and a silver collection taken up.
At this social the "necktie quilt" will be drawn for, so we are appealing to all members having tickets or stubs on this quilt to send them in or bring them to our next meeting.
We are expecting a large turnout to this affair, so we ask members to try and bring some cake or sandwiches, and of course as many friends as you like.
Dates have been set for the Fall sale of work and anniversary luncheon. Watch this paper for further announcements. MRS. MARCH, Sec.

Don't Fall For The Fake Ads In The Pretty Magazines
Good Food, Clothing, Housing, and Good Prices For Fish Will Give You a Good Complexion
When you go to the newsstand to buy your copy of The Fisherman (that is, if you don't subscribe for it) you have no doubt seen the pretty magazines from over the line, with their nice glossy pages and pretty ads of bacon and eggs, etc., that make your mouth water.
One of them is the magazine called^. "Good Housekeeping." It's a nice name

for a magazine for women. It attained quite a reputation for itself by giving products of various advertisers the "seal of approval" by the Good Housekeeping Institute.
Presumably, all the products bearing the seal were strictly tested. But we have our doubts. There is also set up in the U.S.A. by the government, a Federal Trade Commission. It is the business of the commission to protect consumers from fraudulent advertisers. And, sometimes they do a pretty good job.
The commission has lately turnd its attention to Good Housekeeping magazine. Just unpeal your mascara for a moment, sister, and get an eyeful of this from Good Housekeeping:
"A preparation to wash sunlight into your hair. . . . Bring out the full radiant loveliness of blonde or brown hair."
"A hand lotion which will restore smoothness and beauty to hands within 37 seconds."
"A preparation to destroy pimples in 60 seconds."
Like the magazine Liberty, they must have held a stop-watch to that one, but the Federal Trade Commission wouldn't accept it as official and demanded a recount. In fact they charged the firm

advertising in the magazine with unfair and deceptive practices which are to the injury of the public. They declared that Good Housekeeping published ads making false claims, and that its seals of approval are just so much eyewash.
The Federal Trade Commission also exposed other ads in the magazine, such as, "A butter featured as containing fine cream and 'all its country sweetness'." It seems that this ad was only partly true. The butter wasn't 'country sweet' but, neither was it butter. It was just a bit of decomposed and putrid animal or vegetable substance," according to the Commission.
After this, we hope that womenfolk of B.C. fishermen will be careful of what they buy when wanting to pretty themselves up for the Fishermen's Dance. If you are given to reading these slick journals with their enticing pictures of fake preparations, be careful of what you buy. If you are too plump, or puffy, or have inflamed eyes or lids, or if you have an uncomfortable upper plate, you'd better see a doctor or dentist. If you have wrinkles, or a skin with the texture of a chain-store Christmas raisin cake, and you desire "a skin you love to touch," then you'd better, use the good old-fashioned oatmeal, or just plain soap and water if you want to play safe.
If you have indigestion or constipation be careful of the ads about the preparation "brought by a travelling Merchant of Bagdad for use in chronic constipation."
When you read about how Carol Bombard took three bottles of this Bagdad
Tony Fial, well-known gillnetter of the Pacific Coast Fishermen's Union joined up last week with the New Westminster Machine Gunners. Maybe you think that's an everyday occurrence. But Tony did more than that. He solved the problem of what to do with his boat. He donated it to the Pacific Coast Fishermen's Union.
Tony says, "The hull is not in extra good condition, but it was good enough to fish out around the Sooke traps and it will do to store the engjne in."
The engine, by the way, is in first class condition, and the boat is now in the hands of Local No. 5 on the North Arm of the Fraser River.
We hope that when Tony comes marching home again, his country will fix him up with a boat fit for heroes to live in.
