Union Should Ditch Death Benefit Fund, Let Government Assume Responsibility
At the fifth annual convention of the UFFUU to be held March 20 there will undoubtedly be a discussion on the first year's experience of the operation of the union"s Mortuary Fund established by the previous convention. Beiow we publish the views of one union member in the hope that this expression of opinion will provoke a frank and full discussion among the union membership which will provide the delegates at the convention with adequate guidance as to the views of the rank and file on this matter. Our columns are open to your views.—Editor.
Editor, The Fisherman: I read in your paper recently "Have you paid your mortunary fund assessment?" I must confess that I think a death benefit is a very good thing, provided that the union can afford it without going to the members to get the funds.
In 1939, when I joined the union, I did so in order to help the fishermen get better conditions and fish prices. I did not think at that time it was to be an insurance union. I consider that it is the government's business to look after the widows, not the union's.
The mortuary fund assessment is not going to be less! It will be more as time goes on and I bet that in one more year the annual membership fee will be up $3000 or more and I must confess that I for one cannot pny this amount. This is how it arpears to me as the members have already had to pay $3.50 each.
The members of the union were not first asked if they wanted this or not. I did not see or hear any such question. Now I am one of tl.ose low trollers and when the fishing is over in the fall you look at how much you have and you see little enough. Between the upkeep of the boa*, and g'ar and the taxes, food and clothing for
the winter, the various drives, local and national, during the winter, and now the mortuary fund. I find 10 fathoms between the two ends and I cannot get them together.
And what do we bachelors get out of it? Nothing and there is a 50-50 chance that we will be drowned with the boat we fish from.
I must confess that if I cannot get twelve months union membership for $15.00 I would not be able to continue.
Hoping this practice will be discontinued,
Yours for a better solution, EINER J. OLSEN. Quatsino, B.C.

Editor: The Fisherman: I have been a member of Local 89, Cannery Workers and a constant reader of The Fisherman which keeps me in touch with activities pertaining to the fishing industry. This has always been a source of interest to me particularly when away from the coast
Before enlisting in the army I was an employee of B.C. Packers at New Westminster.
I would certainly appreciate receiving The Fisherman regularly, in accordance with your offer to servicemen.
To close this letter I would like to remember the boys in the plant by wishing them a prosperous New Year.
