Rivers Inlet Canneries Re-awaken As irations For Season Get Underway
Prepai
Editor, The Fisherman: The can-4>-
neries here in the Inlet are coming out of hibernation and much activity is in evidence. The familiar ring of the gut hammer at meal times and the pounding of corks over net loft floors announce the presence of men and women whose nimble fingers feverishly punish the old needles. A few fishermen have arrived on the scene including John Hanson who this year sails one of the neatest gillnetters on the Coast. She is a beaut and is powered with a Chrysler Crown. Capt. Hanson will now be hard on Art Tanner's tail unless I miss my guess.
The fishing companies are making major repairs to canneries and camps. The old days of crumby bunk-houses and fishermen's wigwams will soon be relegated to the dark ages. One oldtimer, however, informs me that Good Hope Cannery is trailing the field as far as appearance and modern convenience go. Perhaps he's being nasty.
Met Joe Moore the other day. He says: "There just ain't no more fish." To prove his contention he gives as evidence "the fact that the eagles are now all on relief on the clam beaches." So if what Joe says is true, and there's no question but what Joe is possessed with more than his share of jungle savvy, us square heads will have to wangle some extra ammunition out of the R.B. and massacre the eagles.
Just to prove that there are finer fruits to be gathered in Rivers than in Smiths, Oscar Orpana has picked up his bed and come over from Margaret Bay.
There is a Ghost yacht tied up in Schooner Pass. At least it presents a ghostly appearance in contrast to a fisherman's rig. The Lord sure moves in devious ways His fishermen to reform.

ent centers in order to bring about the conditions necessary. To achieve these results we must get together in an international as well as a national set-up.
I'm flat on my back right now, but if I ever get up again which I hope to do in the near future, I'm going to write some more on this subject. In the meantime, let's hear from the rest of you.

Halibut Landings
International Fishing Set-up
Editor, The Fisherman:
I see by the issue of May 23 that the Halibut fishermen of the different ports in Washington and B.C. were more or less at logger heads over* the issues involved in the controversy over the recent tie-up. This condition is not unique in any way in the circumstances, but there is no need for conditions to prevail which make such circumstances possible. All we need is unity of the different groups of fishermen in the differ-

Truth is not only stranger than fiction, it's harder to get. This is a fact of life that was uppermost in the mind of Alexander Dovzhenko, famous Soviet film director, when he conceived his plan for making
^"Ukraine in Flames." official record of the great liberation offensive which comes to the Paradise Theatre on June 19.
Dovzhenko, a native of Kiev, began to develop his project in November, 1942, but he felt his film could not tell the whole story of Nazi crimes and the Red Army's vengeance unless it included captured enemy material.
Accordingly, he instructed the twenty-four cameramen who were assigned to the shock troops of the Ukrainian armies to be on the lookout, and every battlefield and town taken by Soviet troops was carefully checked for abandoned Nazi film.
One film magazine was found on the body of a Ministry of Propaganda cameraman killed by a shell fragment. Other enemy films were found in wrecked freight trains loaded with loot which the retreating Wehrmacht was trying to remove to safety.
Some of the prize material thus acquired shows Hitler reviewing troops in a Russian city, Hermann Goering inspecting the farmhouse of a Ukrainian. peasant, and Nazi units fighting a losing battle against advancing Soviet troops.
