'Pilchard Willing To Die For War Effort/ Reports Union Weighman From Ucluelet
Editor, The Fisherman,—May 1 through the columns of your paper extend my thanks to the management of Nootka Ban-field Co. plant at Port Albion, B.C., for the splendid cooperation I have met with since I came here as a Fisherman's Union weight man. The Pilchards were very slow*-

coming but it looks now as if they have made up their minds and are quite willing to die for the war effort.
Some small matters have oc-cured two or three times which were no fault of either the company or the fishermen and have been mutually settled without any cursing or "Rusterfit."
I would like to thank our Camp Cook Miss Mable Haner and her three assistants for their tasty meals and prompt service. Miss Haner is not only a good cook but also an expert "Gong Gong" player; an instrument which consists of a bent railroad rail struck with a steel bar; she took first prize at the Toronto Conservatory of Music.
Miss Stakkland's duty is to see that the dishes are shining white and clean; one or two coffee cups have met with accidents but she seems to think that that might happen to anyone.
Miss Viola Hanson's duty is to see that nobody leaves ,the mess-house with an empty stomach and besides that, if anyone is downhearted she is quite willing to bring out her piano-accordian and play you any number wished for.
Miss Doiron's duty is to see that you start to eat your hotcake from the right side. One morning she served me a hotcake that was burned on one side but she told me it was no fault of the cook as it was very foggy that morning. Besides other duties she also sees to it that syrup is not smeared all over the table-cloth.
At the General Store you can buy almost anything you wish and of course without money.
Bert the Butcher is willing to supply you with a juicy steak any time, night or day.
Bob the Storekeeper wants to sell you anything from a secondhand magazine to a jug of vinegar,

but the other day when I asked him for a pair of pants he said, "I'm sorry! I haven't got your size but I can sell you a pair of bloomers for your mother-in-law, provided she was not born on a Friday the thirteenth."—After two blood transfusions and a bottle of pop I was able to leave the store escourted by a half pound of tobacco.
My biggest worry is after the boats are unloaded and the company tallyman brings his tally-slip down to the boat,—after a hasty look, always a little cursing is heard but mostly in Norwegen which of course does not mean a thing in this country. But when they see Nelson Dunkin the Tallyman's wonderful hand-printing they can not help but force a wee little smile through the lower corner of their eyes, which they have no control over and they begin to think, "I guess that was all there was in the boat."
The fishermen are working hard for their living and deserve all they can get. Now with a few fogless days, lots of fish and with W.C.'s help we should be able to keep the wolf from the door this coming winter.
I do hope the good understanding between the management and fishermen shall continue throughout the season so that we can all call it a success when we leave for home. Now I better stop here so Edward Lepseth and Larsen's Grocery will have space for their adds.
P.S.—I also hope that the readers will forgive me if they should find a few English words spelled in Norwegen.

CO-OPS DISCUSS CENTENNIAL PLAN
Representatives of five local cooperatives met on August 21 to discuss plans for a celebration in honor of the one-hundredth year of cooperative progress.
Mrs. R. G. Phillips of the Vancouver Consumer's Cooperative So-city \vas the chairman of the meeting. Bob Wulff represented the Fishermen's Co-op and C. D. Clarke attended from the B.C. Cooperative Wholesale. Other Cooperatives participating were the University Students Cooperative (boarding house), and the Cooperative Rural Community.
Several projects, including a display of cooperative products, and a speaker and film service for local clubs, were discussed. Members of the committee were delegated to make arrangements and collect material.
Change Procedure For Extra Rations
The issue of extra rationed com-modies will no longer be handled by the Ships Stores Officer of the WPTB, according to a notice from Senior Ration Officer A. H. Thomsett, effective on the first of September..
All applications following that date for these commodities, either for deepsea or otherwise, must be addressed to the Ration Administration in the Marine Building.
It is pointed out that when original applications for extra rations are made, the regular ration books of all crew members must be presented together with fishing licenses and clearance slip.
Pilchard Plants At Full Capacity
Pilchard plants are still operating at full capacity, according to latest reports received.
Plants in the Nootka area have handled 10,164 tons green from which 338,760 gallons of oil have been extracted. Some 1,725 tons of meal have been obtained.
In Barkley Sound, 4,304 tons green have been taken with a resulting production of 113,840 gallons oil and 702 tons meal.
Cases canned for both areas total 16,858.
