By FRED OLSEN
SEPTEMBER 17, 1945. (Southward bound)—Since leaving Prince Rupert, the "Mistral" has visited the following fishing centres: Port Edward, Inverness, North Pacific, Sunnyside, Cas-siar, Carlisle, Butedale, Klemtu, Tallheo and Bella Coola.
Meetings were held at all the places named and the interest and enthusiasm of the membership is gratifying proof that the union machinery is in high gear and operating smoothly.
And now, to hearken back to our favorite topic: All the foregoing places have achieved 100 per cent organization. Special mention is due Klemtu, which is 100 per cent plus, for the reason that the Chinese workers, although not covered ,by union agreement, are members of the union to the last man. This is a notable achievement—one of the milestones in the union organization of the industry.
Next, and certainly not least on the special list, is Bella Coola. This is the second straight fishing local in B.C to 'reach the 100 per cent mark. As there are certain peculiarities and difficulties in organizing fishing locals this performance is another Historic milestone in our forward march.
Business agent Alex Gordon expressed the opinion that the reason for this achievement was the tradition of cooperation established by those hardy pioneers who battered down the wilderness to make the Bella Coola valley the famous beauty spot it is today. * * * '-
THE foregoing record is some-*■ thing to be chalked up for our side, but the job is far from finished. This is no time to slacken and start patting ourselves on the back. The toughest part of the road lies ahead. Management has already signified that the next stage is the downward trend of wages and prices, and wages will come first—if we don't watch out.
The only way we can watch out is to redouble our organizational activities, which means that each I and every member' must be fully cognizant of his or her responsibility as a partner in the union and see to it that the organization is brought up to full strength wherever they happen to be.
The excellent record quoted herein did not come about solely as the result of the work done by organizers. In the places mentioned there exists a high degree of union-consciousness and we unreservedly grant full credit to our brother and sister members concerned. They saw that there was a job to be done and they did it—and they did not neglect their obligations as workers in an industry in the process.
Remember, each boat without a union sticker, or each worker without a union button, is a weak link in the chain we are forging, and it is up to each one of us, wherever we are, to fix it.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Fred Olsen's Log of the Mistral was written on his trip down and mailed at Namu. He arrived several days before his article came by mail.
A full illustrated story of the entire trip referred to will be published next week.
