Decision to build the new cold storage was reached at the Coop's annual meeting last February. Members meeting in Vancouver at that time agreed on the need for a cold storage to adequately handle an increasing production of fresh fish.
Growth of the U.F. Co-op has been quite rapid since it was organized in 1940 by members of the United Fishermen's Union to purchase the Hall at 138 East Cordova Street. In 1942, the Association ventured into the production of fish livers and vitamin oil refining.
In 1944 the Association was forced to vacate the leased, premises which housed its oil plant, and it was decided to build a new plant which could accommodate not only the oil plant but also the fast-growing fish department which had begun operation in 1943. To help finance this a Debenture Bond Issue of $75,000 was raised by members of the Association, and construction of the present plant commenced. A further extension to the plant was made in the spring of this year to provide ice storage and additional fish-handling space.
The following is a brief description of the plant operation at present:
Oil Department
Occupies approximately 30 percent of space. Includes cold storage room 20'x50', capable of storing 160,000 lbs. of livers. Includes storage tanks outside of building capable of storing 20,000 gallons of oil.
Laboratory
Equipped for testing and con-
trol of oil production. Considerable r?search work is carried on to develop new methods for the handling and marketing of fish and by-products.
Cold Storage
The building includes a small cold , storage plant with working storage capacity of about 150,000 pounds.
Ice Plant
Installation completed this spring. Production capacity about 20 tons daily.
Fish Department
Together with cold storage occupies about 70 percent of present space.
This gives a very general idea

New Sales Setup For E. F. Gundry
Ted Gundry, Western Canada representative of Joseph Gundry and Co., announces formation of a new sales organization to handle the British fishnet manufacturer's products on the Pacific Coast.
Known as Gundry (Pacific) Ltd., the newly incorporated business will operate from headquarters at 362 Alexander Street, where improved facilities will speed supplies of 'Kingfisher' nets.
Associated with this B.C. Company is Gundry-Pymore Ltd., which represents the Gundry interests in Eastern and Central Canada.
John Redden has been appointed a director and manager of Gundry (Pacific) Ltd. For the past two years he has been associated with Mr. Gundry in building the local agency. At the present time both men are visiting canneries along the coast; it will be a farewell tour for Mr. Gundry who returns to the English factory next fall where he plans to maintain close touch with requirements of the B.C. fishing industry.
Mr. Gundry states that there has recently been a slight improvement in production of Kingfisher linen nets arid lines, but he expects it will be some time before cotton products are again available for the Pacific market.

of the present plant operation. The situation is now that the fish operation is increasing rapidly and is extremely handicapped for lack of sufficient storage facilities. Together with the increase in fish production has come the development of export sales and domestic sale both locally and in the other provinces. The Sales Department under the management of the Fishermen's Cooperative Federation is growing so quickly that it could pretty well use the present fish floor and cold storage rooms for packing and shipping purposes.
At the last annual meeting of the Association on February 14 and 15 of this year the board of directors was authorized to float a new issue of 3 percent debenture bonds in the total amount of $150,000, the proceeds to be used for the erection of a fully modern cold storage plant. Those members in attendance at the annual meeting were alive to the necessity of providing additional facilities to handle the increased production, and all members of the Cooperative are expected to rally to the bond drive. A number of active fishermen have been appointed as voluntary salesmen and their names will appear in next issue of The Fisherman. These fishermen salesmen have been appointed largely on a geographical basis and quotas have been set for each area. It is the hope of the bond campaign committee that members in each area will do their best to keep their own district at the top of the list of bond subscriptions.
In bringing its campaign into being, the Co-op points out that "None can dispute the fact that Cooperatives have contributed greatly to improving the welfare of the fishermen. Can you imagine the situation if there were no fishermen's co-ops in the field? Fishermen cooperators, invest in your future! Every Cooperator a Bond Subscriber!"
