Data Sought On Tidal Wave
The British Navy has requested the Meteorological Service of Canada to collect all information available from British Columbia on the tidal wave which took place north of the Hawaiian Group on April 2, 1946. Important wave phenomena were observed at various places on the west coast of North America. The following types of information should be reported :
• Records of ships at sea. When and whether they noticed a wave or waves, and a description with particular reference to heights and times of successive waves.
• Records of small craft near shore. Precise position and details of wave, whether water currents followed or anchors were dragged.
• Shore observations of height of water on steep, cliffed coasts, on fiat coasts and on rivers and estuaries.
• The most precise possible statement of the hour and date that any abnormal phenomena were observed.
The items stated are provided as a guide only, as all pertinent information would be of interest to oceanographic authorities. Replies should be addressed to:
Controller, Meteorological Service, 315 Bloor Street, West, Toronto 5, Ontario, or sent to the office of The Fisherman at 138 East Cordova Street.
Organized Labor Objects To Hon. Ilsley's Budget
Organized labor considers the taxation changes announced in the annual budget which has now been brought down in Parliament by Finance Minister James L. Ilsley a "bitter pill" to swallow.

Federation Sends Christie To U.S.
Val Christie, office manager of the United Fisher' n's Cooperative Association, i= tak.ug on a new job in the selling field for the Fishermen's Cooperative Federation, for which Jje is about to undergo sever* months of training.
He is going to the federation's New York sales office. There he will be given first hand training in merchandising of the federation's products.
He will visit operations in New York, Boston, Washington and Chicago under the tutelage of Bill Woods, federation sales manager. This is the first step in a plan to establish closer contact be.tween the two headquarters.
Don Bentley, former Cooperative Wholesale accountant, has been appointed successor to Christie as office manager of the U.F. Co-op, and as manager of the Lower Fraser Fishermen's Credit Union.
They fall far short of giving the relief that was expected from the high income tax for the workman who has' to pay the butcher, the baker and the landlord. The disappointment is the greater, considering the rise in the cost of living.
Percy R. Bengough, President of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada, stated the budget should have eased the taxation load considerably more for workers.
"Instead of reducing the excess profits and corporation taxes, the government should have lessened to that degree the burden on the people less able to pay," he declared.
The budget increases the income tax exemption only from $660 to $750 for single persons and from $1,200 to $1,500 for married persons. The Trades and Labor Congress had urged that the exemptions be raised to $1,200 for single and $2,000 for married persons.
The new exemption rates do not become effective until January 1. 1947. They will not be reflected in
tax deductions from pay envelopes until the first earnings after January 1 next.
This delayed feature for taxation relief is unique in the Dominion Parliament. In the budget of last October, the reductions then—of 16 percent for the balance of the 1945 calendar year—went into effect at once. The provision for delay in the pending bill therefore ■ came as a complete surprise.
The budget, as reported last week gives a concession to farmers and fishermen, whose earnings differ from year to year. They will be permitted to pay income tax on the basis of their average earnings over a period of three years.
Big Business given ~
direct corporation tax is cut in____
40 to 30 percent and the excess profits tax is also reduced from 20 to 15 percent. This will be an overall Federal reduction of from 60 to 45 percent, insofar as Federal taxes are concerned.

STEVES TON, B.C.
Your customers keep coming back to buy more fish when the quality is right. Over a time, each may bring you considerable profit.
But, if some day you sell "off quality" stock, the customer may never come back, and the profits, so far as that one is concerned, have ended. It may be sheer accident on your part. You may be in a hurry. But your customer seldom takes this into consideration ... he just stops buying.
It pays to make sure of quality before you sell, and take the relatively small loss on "off quality" stock at the time. "Lost fish cost less than lost customers."
