WEA School Hears Huberman
The Workers' Educational Association will conduct its Summer School this year at Acadia Camp, in the grounds of the University of British Columbia, from August 17 to September 1.
A special feature this year will be the presence of Leo Huberman during the entire school. Mr. Huberman was until recently the Educational Director of the National Maritime Union, and is now editor of the Pamphlet Press, a publishing house devoted to union pamphlets and educational materials. He is famous for his books, "The Labor Spy Racket," an expose of Pinkertons and other informers posing as union leaders in order to smash the unions. He is also well known for writing "We, the People," and "Man's Worldly Goods," both required reading for thinking unionists, and lastly "The Truth About Unions." ,
He will deal with a wide variety of subjects at the Summer School, including Public Relations for the Union, Current Union Problems, How to Teach a Workers' Group History, the Shop Steward's Role, and will personally conduct special groups for unionists who desire special instruction. These latter groups will be formed at the school on the basis of written requests from workers intending to attend the school and who desire instruction not otherwise planned for at regular periods.
Claude Donald will direct the Summer School, assisted by Leo Huberman, members of the staffs of the Seattle Labor School, the University of Washington, the University of B.C., and prominent B.C. Union leaders and others.
Further details will be announced shortly.

Here are some recipes to "clip" and tack up in your galley:
EMERGENCY BISCUITS
2 cups bread flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
Few grains salt 2-4 tablespoons fat
Milk or water (as directed
below)
Sift and measure flour, add baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture is finely combined. Add enough milk so that dough may be dropped from a spoon on a greased pan without spreading. Bake in hot over 425 degrees Fahrenheit, 15 to 20 minutes.
Variations:
Biscuits may be used in vegetable shortcakes or with left-over meats mixed with canned soups as tomato, vegetable or mushroom.
STEAMED APPLE PUDDING
4-6 apples or other fresh fruit
1 cup flour
One-third to half cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder % teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter cup milk or water Wipe, pare, core and slice apples into top part of double boiler which has been greased. Sprinkle with sugar and steam until nearly tender over bottom part of double boiler.
Mix the remaining ingredients as in the emergency biscuit. Pour this batter over the apples. Cover and steam 25-35 minutes longer.
Serve with sugar and cream or whipped canned milk.
APPLE COMPOTE
Core and quarter apples, then cook in a very small amount of water. Add sugar when cooked as desired.
PUDDINGS
Make up a pudding powder by mixing with canned milk and cut fresh fruit into it. This makes a pleasing and appetizing dessert.
MEATS — SWISS STEAK
2 lb. round steak, i-1%' thick 1-3 cup flour
Salt and pepper
Dripping (about 2 tbsp.)
Sliced onion 2 cups boiling water or 1 cup
strained tomatoes and 1 cup
water.
Wipe meat, roll in mixed flour and seasonings. Pound flour into meat .using wooden potato masher or a heavy plate. Put meat into heated frying pan with melted fat—brown well on each side. Add onion, boiling water and tomato.
Note:—Meat may be cooked in a casserole in the oven with added vegetables.
LIVER WITH TOMATO GRAVY
% lb. liver per person 1 tablespoon flour per person Salt and pepper
1 tablespoon fat or dripping and V* tin of tomato juice per person.
Dredge liver slices in flour to which the seasoning has been added. Brown liver on both sides— cook 10 minutes before adding tomato juice. The flour will thicken the tomato juice, making a nice gravy to serve with the liver.

2 eggs
1 cup water or tomatoes
2 cups soft bread-crumbs 4 teaspoons salt
Few grains*pepper Grated onion Strips of bacon Beat the egg and add other ingredients — mix well. Use half the mixture for meat balls and cook the rest as meat loaf for next day with strips of bacon on top. Variations:
