Unionism Means Collective Security
Editor, The Fisherman:
After listening to a recent speech by Mr. Alex Gordon I would like to further a point he made on the necessity of union education by referring to the question: "What does trade union-Ism mean to a young newcomer to the industry?"
Being a newcomer myself, I naturally referred this question to several of the veteran union men. Each of them replied in the same manner: "It means you get the benefits of our sacrifices and hard work, which was offset by the company's methods of attempting to stop organization by blacklists, scabs, etc."
But this is not a satisfactory answer to a person not familiar with unionism. Instead the answer should be: "Unionism means collective security for all concerned."
One only has to read the newspapers to realize there is a dangerous - undercurrent being sent out to try to split up the unions, force back the days of long hours and low pay and many other former grievances.
So let's all get behind the coming educational program of the UFAWU and help clear up any suspicion and doubt in the minds of the newcomer to the industry.

Paid Holiday Fishing Not Union Policy
Editor, The Fisherman:
With regard to the limitation of fishing licenses: As we all know, under our democracy every person who is a naturalized Canadian, or native-bred citizen, is entitled to make a living, and therefore cannot very well be refused a license.
However, this side of the question seems to come to the fore very forcibly, viz:
There are many people who are on an all-the-year salary and who so arrange their leave of absence from their jobs around or about the peak run of the salmon on the river. These people hardly ever go north to other fishing grounds. They are also drawinu pay from their jobs for this holiday.
Our union policy is that no uuu should hold down two jobs and draw pay for both. The refusal of a license to the above people would not be imposing any hardship or deprive them of the necessities of life.
Our union should point this out to the department of fisheries which would be in a position to check on the matter. Also, all members irr the House at Ottawa from this part of B.C. should have it brought to their attention.

Feels Communism Means 'Dictation'
Editor, The Fisherman:
In answer to Ole Martin's question why fishermen fear and dislike communism: The fact that a man is an independent fisherman should be answer enough. That a man will endure the hardships of fishing shows the length to which he will go to escape dictation. And that is what communism means to me.
One has only to look at Russia to see what communism will do for the poor man, especially in the fishing industry. The independent fishermen in that country will soon be as extinct as the Czars. From all reports there are no independent vessel owners, no union of fishermen or shoreworkers. All people connected with the industry there have to do as they are told, or cist. Wouldn't that be just dandy for some of the big operators in this country. Ours may be a tough job but we can sure tell the big four where they get off at. So let us be thankful that we live in a country where labor still has the right to organize and bargain with the boss.

THREE FRASER RIVER BUOYS DAMAGED
It is reported number 0, number 4, and Deas Island Gas Buoys, Fraser River, have been seriously damaged by booms of logs and their light extinguished. They will be repaired as soon as possible.
Editor's Note: We hope the above letter from Mr. Shoneman serves to stimulate discussion on the subject raised by correspondent Ole Martin in a previous issue of The Fisherman. In order to obtain clarity on the points mentioned about independent vessel owners, union organization, etc., in the USSR, we, are contacting Mr. O. R. Hannah, who is not only a fisherman member of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers' Union but is also secretary of the B.C. Section, -National Council for Canadian-Soviet Friendship. Again may we urge our readers to make The Fisherman their forum for discussion of current Issues such as those raised in the letter above, the matter of limiting the issuance of licenses and the many scores of other questions which affect us all. Make your way to the platform and have your say, because "you have the floor."

Restoring Kerch Fisheries; A Major Soviet Project
Kerch on the Crimean peninsula is not only an iron and steel town, but also an important center of the fishing industry. Here before the war up to 100,000 tons of anchovies and thousands of tons of Kerch herring and grey mullet were caught and processed annually.
The Kerch fisheries, wharves and refrigerator establishments were destroyed by the Germans. Serious damage was likewise done by the ocCupationists to the fisheries in Taganrog, Rostov and Yeisk. The fishing fleet suffered heavily, being reduced to one-sixth of its pre-war strength. According to data, far from complete, the damage done to the fishing industry on the Black and Azov Seas amounts to 500 million rubles.
Thousands of Soviet people are now engaged in the restoration of the fishing industry, displaying great enthusiasm and ingenuity in utilizing the remnants of the fleet and equipment to conduct fishing and processing operations without interruption. Production buildings, warehouses, refrigerator plants and vessels are being repaired and the entire fishing industry is undergoing radical reconstruction.
In a short space of time the Black Sea and Azov Sea fishermen have built 778 small and medium and 443 large fishing vessels. Shipyards have completed 50 trawlers, tugs, etc.
The fisheries and refrigerator establishments have been fully re-

The Azov Sea is shallow and its waters contain very little salt. It is remarkably rich in sturgeon, which provides excellent caviar, and other valuable species of fish.
Topping the list of fish to be found in the Black Sea is mackerel, which is 20-25 centimeters long, has hardly any bones, and is delicious whether salted, dried or smoked. Tinned in oil, Black Sea mackerel is just as good as the best sardines.
The mackerel winter in the Mediterranean and swim in large schools in spring to the Black Sea to spawn and return to the Mediterranean water only in the beginning of winter.
A thorough study of the life of these species of fish was. made before the war and passive catching methods were replaced by active methods. Speedy fishing vessels were built and the so-
How To Get More Customers And Sell More Fish
Millions of dollars have been spent on different ways of getting fish to the table—with all their good flavor and quality.
Tiiey are iced, quick frozen, smoked, canned and salted . . . but it all adds up to one thing . . . people will buy fish when the quality and flavor is there. Yet in spite of all these modern wonders . . . there is no rubstitute for good sense of the fishermen, who watcn with eagle-eye to see that no "off quality" stock gets sold. Whether yo« are selling to the consumer, merchant or processing plant, it pays to remember that lost fish costs less than lost customers. It's the satisfied customers, who keep coming back to buy more, that makes the fish business profitable.

caJled "pocketing method" of catching fish was introduced. A school is surrounded and caught in "pocket" nets 30 meters high and 150 meters long.
These vessels and nets were destroyed by the; Nazi invader*. New and faster vessels are now being built and Soviet fishermen are getting better "pocket" nets.
Measures have been taken to speed up propagation of grey mullet in the Black Sea. A wide passageway is planned from the Azov Sea to Lake Sivash, which will be transformed into a large spawning grounds for mullet.
Despite numerous difficulties, the fishermen of the Black and Azov Seas topped their spring catching plans as well as the fish processing program for the first six months of the current year. a drive is on to catch 20,000 tons of fish above plan by the end of the year.
