Quathiaski Reviews Cod lie-up; Plans Anti-Bill 39 Petition
By DOUG MORTON
There has been a lot doing in the Quathiaski area lately, what with the cod tie-up and the various meeting's concerning it.
Although we lost on our demands for a raise in the price of cod, we did gain a certain amount of knowledge and understanding of the situation, and I am sure most of the fishermen are of the opin- ^ ion that we must start now and get ready for next season. There are many things t o look into, such as market conditions, grading of fish and whether the fisheries will stand such heavy DouK Morton fishing as has been carried on
during the war. It was suggested at one of our meetings that the ling cod production be put on a quota similar to that of the halibut; this would tend to conserve the cod and would hold prices steadier, and not flood the market as at present.
If we are going to settle this for the next year put your ideas on paper and send them in to The Fisherman for all of us to mull over. If the trawls are kept out of the gulf, will that improve the market for ling cod? I doubt it. Most of 'the ling cod that gluts the market today was caught on the West Coast.
At our local meeting on March 22 we decided to celebrate May Day with the help of our women's auxiliary. May 1, being the one day celebrated by most of the trade unions the world over, will now be celebrated in Quathiaski.
Annual meeting of the Quathiaski local was held on April 2 with a fair attendance.
The meeting was opened with a reading of the minutes of the previous meeting, and then Bill 39 was discussed and condemned as also were the anti-labor politicians who proposed it; they seem to want to cause trouble instead of averting it. Action decided upon was the preparation and circulation of a petition protesting the bill's worst features. W. A. Stanley, who was a delegate to the annual UFAWU convention, gave a very good report on behalf of himself and F. A. Stanley for which he received a vote of thanks from the membership.
A committee is being formed on the island with one delegate from each organization which will be a sort of citizens' central committee to act on the various situations that arise from time to time on the island. D. Morton was elected to act on the committee to represent the Fishermen's Union.

Miners1 Strike Unchanged
The strike of the Maritime coal miners is now entering its third month, with scant progress toward settlement. An Ottawa conference last week between union, government and operators officials, failed to change the adamant stand of the operators or government, according to Freeman Jenkins, president of District 26, United Mine Workers. The Maritime Miners' Strike
Committee is urging that continued pressure be kept up on the federal government to assume its rightful responsibility in dealing with the $60,000,000 corporation which holds the key to the livelihood of 13,000 miners and their
