J OTS OF THINGS have been happening around here of late. The most important of them is that at last we have a new float. It is a float calculated to make one swell with pride, until it is mentioned what it cost to build. However, we have to get something for our taxes. The .old one was ready to fall apart at any time so with a new float ready for business we are all set for the coming year. If the Ash will only cooperate we'll be all right.
The new float also opens up new possibilities for a fish camp. If we can find an enterprising fish company who would like to put up an ice house we will furnish the float. There seems to be some difference of opinion about the advisability of maintaining iish camps in the gulf but a pool packer would solve most of the trouble. There is plenty of small feed around here now and there should be lots of fish this year. Every boat calling here reports blueback jumping in Welcome Pass.
If we can prevail upon a kindly government to sell us the old float it will be set aside for use as a net rack for the gillnetters in the fall season. There will have to be a lot of work done on the remains of the old float but it might be worth it in the long run.
Several boats have been showing up here lately. Some of them are

Fishermen Win Boat Show Prizes
Several fishermen managed to take home some fine cash and gear prizes in competitions sponsored by the Vancouver Boat Show last week.
Winners of the $350 gillnet which was first prize in the gillnet set contest were Ralph Berg and Sport Iverson of the "Leona I". Second prize of a $100 pair of binoculars went to the owner of the "Norma", of Steveston. The "Wildwind" was placed first in the contest, but later disqualified for using a net below the standard 150 fathoms.
For making a full set in record time of 18 minutes, 50 seconds, Captain Louis Percich and the crew of the "Gradac'-C won $350 while' the crew of the "Departure Bay 5" took $100 second money with a set of 22 minutes, 30 seconds.
First to have 1500 hooks in the water, picked up, and cleaned among halibut contenders was the 'B.C. Rover" with Helge Skaipnes at the helm. Number two position was won by the "Pacific Belle" with Captain Bill Pitre.
In the speed races for herring seiners, the "Teresa" proved to be the swiftest, beating out the second place "Western Ranger" and four other contenders.
Among salmon seiners, the ''Ot-tar" came in first while the "Klem-tu" was second. The "Kodiak" proved too speedy for other halibut vessels, winning this contest. The "Brooks Bay" took second position.

BULL HARBOR, Sunday. May 2 —Last year I said that the biggest j fleet that Bull Harbor had ever j seen was assembled here. Well, this year the impossible has happened and there is a great deal bigger fleet here.
There have been considerable changes made at Blaine Myers' camp with several new floats added including a large new store float. The old store has been turned into a restaurant so that when we get tired of eating our own goulash we can cross the float and try someone else's. There is a new float under the ,oil shed and somebody has sprung a new toilet which is a white enamel version with a varnished seat that flies into an upright position when not in use — this action is caused through a block and tackle arrangement with a large counterbalance. The toilet is of a self-flushing type—if you don't flush it yourself nobody else will. The draught bucket is supplied.
According to reports there is as much halibut in this area as anywhere on the coast, although it is quite noticeable that the halibut longline boats are being very cautious about saying anything on the air that would lead you to believe that they are getting any fish. The only ones talking on the air are the ones that are not in the fish.
I heard that Adolph Prince had a really good day somewhere on the Goose Island baifk with the "Ven-etta Prince," catching an estimated 15,000 pounds .on the opening day.
The "Aleutian" delivered 13,000 pounds here tonight for the first two days. The fishing was tough, here today due to it making up to a 35 mile an hour southeaster this afternoon so that he got the most of that on the opening day somewhere in the vicinity of Scott Islands.
Rumor has it that the "Norge" has around 10.000 hut she is not in

yet. Bill Pitre of the "Pacific Belle" is in the area but the last I heard had n.ot managed to connect with any large amount of the flat ones. Bob Holt of the "Western Fisher" delivered 6,000 pounds here tonight. * The trolling fleet is here in real force this year due partly to the fact that the west coast of the Island seems very quiet. The only springs reported are being caught by Fred Homer of the "Zorina" and Bud North of the "Arvilan". Bud has a radio telephone this year.
There has been a great increase in the number of phones this year according to what I hear. The following boats now have phones installed. "Rage Reef", "Sea Raider", "Storm 3", "Alta", "Fisher Boy". "Western Standard", "West-em Maid", "Viking 3", "Topknot" and a whole lot more I can't think of at present.
Alex Sims or the "Loch Monar", Jack Homer, "Nipentuck",; Norman brothers, "Carluke"; Andy Howich, "Penguin", and a whple host of others are laying in Fishermen's Bay due to the southeaster. Andy Howich had a good day yesterday off Sea Otter Cove landing around 1,300 pounds of halibut.
The longliners who went up to Hecate' Straits apparently overran the fish as they are all complaining of no fish and are working their way back to Goose Island where there seems to be> a deadly radio silence in comparison with the number of boats there.
There are a few draggers on Goose Islands. Norman Sigmund of the "Mary Rita" is there along with the "Sea Luck" and the "Sea Biscuit". Bruce Scott has the "Marronttie" and landed 6,000 pounds of sole the first day out of Rupert where he had some work done on the bulwarks; when I last
Men stake their reputations on the quality of their products ... on th.e things they buy and sell ... or services they give. But men who deal in fish must be extra cautious. One "off colour" lot can lose customers for keeps.
So whether you sell to retailer, wholesaler or consumer—sell on a QUALITY basis only. Maintain this standard regularly and your future is assured . . . your customers are satisfied . . . and you're on the way to bigger and better profits.
Department of Fisheries
Ottawa — Canada HON. JAMES A MACKINNON, MINISTER
heard he was working down towards the Horseshoe.
The Dominion Fishery boat "Howie" was working on a drifting mine off the mouth of the Haka about 30 miles off and after shpot-ing all the ammunition on board at it, it had to give up and go away and leave it drifting as it was prior to their arrival. Very good I would say. Of course it was alright as it was drifting north and would probably drift north through the halibut fleet working on Goose Island Bank and end up on the beach around Millbank Sound.
Max Como of the "Dorabelle 2" is reported to have towed one into the islands and put it on the beach where it was exploded by rifle fire. There is another one reported further out than the one the "Howie" was working on but due to the fact that the "Howie" could not sink the first one there was not much use chasing the second one. I could write a good article on what I think of the Canadian navy, the Dominion Department of Fisheries, the provincial' police, the RCMP and a few more groups that are equipped with boats and are all more or less involved in 'looking after and maintaining the safety of the seaways of the Canadian Pacific Coast but who are falling down in this job to such a degree that it is deplorable.
Ed Ohmstead of Winter Harbor arrived in the harbor along with the "Pearl E." along with the fellow on the "Wanderer". The "Naiad" had 700 pounds of halibut for the first and second days. Frank Palmer of the "Tarus'' had 400 halibut and 100 mild cure for the same two days. Willie Eglund has the poles on the "Grassholm" and has come around from the West coast where it was a pretty grim show.
