We of the Vancouver Women's Auxiliary were pleased to welcome two new members, Mrs. Cris Jakobsen and Mrs. Marguerite La Fort at our November meeting.
The Annual Children's Christmas Party this year for kiddies 12 years and under, will be held Saturday, December 18, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Union Hall, 138 East Cordova. All names of the children who will be receiving their gifts from Santa at the Union Hall should be in not later than Friday, December 10. In the past there have been many happy children receiving their gifts and this year will be no exception; everyone has a grand time at the Vancouver WA's Christmas Party.
The names are coming in every day now and indications are that Santa will be kept pretty busy come December 18.
If Bea Fleming or any of her friends see this would they please contact the Union office. We would like Bea to sing this year, as last year, at the Children's Christmas Party.
For Union Auxiliary members—remember Wednesday, December 15 afternoon or evening down at the hall to sort and wrap Santa's gifts and make final arrangements for the Party.

ern trawler equipment has been fitted in recent vessels completed by Messrs. John Lewis & Sons, Ltd., Aberdeen, for foreign owners, and is being fitted to other vessels for British owners. Its purpose is to eliminate the manual labor involved in dragging the baskets of fish livers from the deck pounds to the liver boiling house in the stern.
"The equipment consists essentially of a water-tight hopper through which the livers are fed to a pump which transfers the livers through a four inch bore pipe to a liver tank directly over the liver boiling house. The choice of a suitable pump was of first importance, as it was realized that a positive displacement was required, but reciprocating motion was to be avoided. The pump finally decided upon was a modi-fled F.12 Mono pump, supplied by Messrs. Mono Pumps Ltd., London.
THE PUMP
"This pump is capable of maintaining a steady, even pressure without pulsation and, due to the oily nature of the whole livers passing through the pump, they provide their own lubricant, thus obviating the necessity for a carT rier such as water or steam. The working parts of the pump are of stainless steel, the motor being in addition hard chrome plated. The body is of either gun metal or cast iron, but it is believed that the latter material will prove better in this application. The pump is arranged to run at about in the quality of oil obtained.'
Case Against Seiners Lost

"The whole unit, consisting of motor and pump, is fitted in a watertight box at the aft end of the working deck, the starter being placed in a suitable position outside the box. The hopper, which is of a fixed capacity to enable the quantity of livers to be measured, is fitted with a hinged water-tight scuttle. The four inch bore delivery pipe is led through the engine casing to the boat deck where the livers are deposited in a 200 gallon tank. This tank is situated directly above the liver boiling-house and is conically shaped at the bottom to permit a gravity flow for the livers to the liver boilers. Each boiler is fed from this tank; the flow is governed by a specially designed gate valve with cutting edge on the side.
STEAM SUPPLY
"A steam supply is fitted to the delivery line just clear of the pump, so that the delivery pipe may be steamed out, thus ensuring that the pipe is cleared of livers and the pipe thoroughly cleaned.
"Reports of the working of this equipment under the severe conditions met with while trawling indicate that it is entirely satisfactory, giving trouble-free service during very heavy fishing. This plant is a great improvement on the earlier steam conveyors pioneered by Messrs. Lewis, as it delivers the livers cold to the tank, with the resulting improvement

Capt. James Lagos and his crew of seven men on the fish seiner, 'North Isle", were freed from charges brought by the B.C. Fisheries Department in Campbell River police court early in November, it was reported in a recent issue of the Powell River News.
Defense counsel was L. S. Eck-ardt, who successfully disputed the evidence of fisheries inspector. A. T. Whitmore, that the men were fishing for commercial purposes with a salmon purse seine net used as a set net.
The offense was alleged to have taken place September 3, one mile west of Salmon Bay in the waters of Johnstone Straits. This is in Fisheries Region No. 3.
Inspector Whitmore was flying overhead in a QCA plane on his way to Alert Bay when he noticed the fish seiner and thought it unusually close to shore. He stated in
court that the plane flew low enough to see the net attached to the shore. J. Hatch, pilot of the plane testified they had gone down to an altitude of 1,000 feet.
T. L. Black of Westview, defense witness, said that he had flown Mr. Eckardt to the spot and at an altitude of 480 feet was unable to see the net at all.
Inspector Whitmore held that the last cork in the net was two feet from the shore, while his pilot placed the distance as two boat-lengths or 32 feet.
Magistrate R. L. Haig-Brown of Courtenay dismissed the charges on the grounds of extreme.variance in evidence. The case set a precedent in the history of Fisheries Department prosecutions, since it was the first time a decision under this section of the B.C. fishing regulations had favored the defendant. R. F. Bainbridge appeared for the Crown.
