Good Food Made Better
WHEN the program for the development of Canada's fisheries was announced by the Hon. R. W. Mayhew early in December, considerable emphasis was placed on the importance of expanding the federal department of fisheries' services to teach consumers how to buy, cook and serve fish.
The department has already set the machinery in motion to get this service operating by establishing in Ottawa an experimental kitchen for fish cookery. The installation of modern equipment, the decorating and furnishing of this kitchen has just been completed.
The kitchen will be the headquarters for an initial staff of six trained home economists who will travel throughout the country giving demonstrations and lectures on fish cooking to women's groups, schools and others. They will be able to pass on to consumers the new recipes created and the knowledge gained through experiments conducted in the kitchen.
What is being done is not only wise, but essential, and the scale of operations should be greatly increased. It is.an important part of the program of popularization among Canadians of one of the finest of foods available.
Strange Power Of Money
BRITISH business and labor are reportedly aroused by the report that America is quietly starting a big trade deal with the Soviet Union after Britain had been advised by the U.S. to turn it down.
Last March, it will be remembered, Truman warned both Canada and Britain that they must stick to a "no trade with Russia" policy, or lose those great big American dollars. Now, it appears, according to ihe British Broadcasting Corporation, as reported by the Canadian-Soviet Friendship Council in its publication News-Facts, that the United States is shipping oil well machinery to the Soviet Union.
British factories had this order first, but cancelled it after Truman had spokes. Now the London "City Observer" reports that America is buying ores from Russia. "Thus Washington uses the 'cold war' scheme to grab profitable Soviet trade, while killing such trade with other countries," News-Facts declares.
It is a fact that Canada has, as a result of this foolish policy of obediently falling in line with "Uncle" Sam's dictates, already lost Soviet orders for locomotives, x-ray equipment, and farm machinery.
This "cold war" may be all right for U.S. brass and the big-shot armament makers and others who are making big money out of such a stratagem. To the thousands of unemployed, however, the cold war being fought in the papers and over the radio has just helped push them onto the breadlines where they are fighting their own war against cold and hunger.
It is not a case of Canada trading or not trading in accordance with whatever policy the U.S. tells her to follow, but one of being realistic. Almost one-half of the world has turned to the policies of communism. Must we ignore them in our trade plans? If we do, the resuk will be bitter times for Canada's people.

AT a Washington school, as in others, the faculty appoints several of the older pupils to be monitors in the halls. They get quite a work-out, especially in the section of the building occupied by the little folks.
The first-graders stand somewhat in awe in the presence of these big seventh and eighth grade folks. It took quite a bit of courage for one small lad to walk right up to and speak to a monitor the first day. He was a bit confused, but very earnest.

AFRIEND who is Greek and whose wife is the same nationality, has a three year old daughter. Home conversation is invariably in Greek, but when the father carries on phone conversations with business associates, the talk naturally is carried on in English.
The little girl, who often listened to the phone discussions, one day could restrain herself no longer.
When dad had finished talking she said, in Greek, "What's the matter with the phone, daddy, can't it speak Greek?"

THE United States government has reportedly set aside $800,-000,000 for atomic development in 1950. Also they are reportedly toying with the idea of making a "hydrogen A-bomb" 1,000 times more powerful than that little thing they dropped on Hiroshima, killing over 50,000 human beings.
Mr. Tiuman apparently made the decision to drop that bomb. America of course would never use poison gas or soft nosed bullets or anything like that ■— we are all decent people on this continent, aren't we? But Mr. Truman will go down in history as the man
who started this ■- started
destroying people by the tens of thousands instead of just a few at a time. He didn't ask you or me if we thought it was all right, he didn't ask the people of Hiroshima or Nagasaki. He and his advisors just said O.K., drop that bomb; kill those 50,000 people.
Now comes the super A-bomb — 1,000 times more powerful — where will it all end? There can only be one end to this madness — the atomic bomb must be banned! Atomic power must be outlawed for the mass killing of people; it is inconceivable that we, the ordinary people, should allow this thing to go on. I like people — I like life and all it means to me. I want ! to live and be with my friends and to see my children grow up. I don't want anyone to be able to say, "OK, atomise that man and everything he knows."
And that is why I signed a petition yesterday — Ban the Bomb -I didn't ask who was behind this petition nor who was for or against it. It is a start, a belated start, to regain our sanity and restore our sense of values. I would like to see everyone's signature on this petition.
You will say, of course, how can we outlaw the bombs when the Soviet Union is making them?—
and there you have the whole reason why we produce A-bombs, for they have become a political sa-th«i than a military weapon. The Soviet Union has called for the outlawing of atomic bombs with international inspection and control to make sure that atomic energy is devoted solely to peaceful purposes — that would entail the immediate destruction of all existing bombs. America says, No — ve will retain our bombs until s«eh time as an International Authority is created which "will own or control all atom material sources and plants on earth", (The Baruch Plan). The Soviet Union now says no, we must and will use our atomic energy to develop our own country.
America sees atomic power development in terms of ever mightier bombs. The Soviet Union in terms of unprecedented economic progress — meanwhile we, the ordinary people of the earth, watch and wait. Let us, rather, ban the bomb now and discuss the details later.
