You Can Help Others And Have Fun Yourself
The Vancouver Women's Auxiliary to the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union has called the week of November 5 to 11 "Build Your Auxiliary" week.
A program has been mapped out by.the ladies who are now members which involves, in addition to publicity, personal visits to homes of a number of union members with the object of convincing their wives that membership in the Auxiliary will be of advantage to them and their families.
Big windup for the week of active organizing will be the Social and Dance at which the person bringing in most new members will be honored in a special presentation.
Publicists for the Vancouver Auxiliary have given a concise explanation of the value of the Auxiliary in the adjoining article.
We would, however, point out to the ladies whose husbands or other relatives fish or work in shore plants, that the Auxiliary provides an excellent means of making social contacts with women whose interests coincide with their own. The Auxiliary, after all, is not merely an organization that deals with matters of serious importance alone, but also has its social side. That social aspect of the Auxiliary does not, and should not, be devoted simply to serving others, but to forms of activity that provide enjoyment and relaxation for the Women's Auxiliary members themselves.
There is, of course, the other side of the Auxiliary work, and that involves such affairs as the Christmas Party for Union members' children - an affair that has added happiness to the life of many a child and mother. The Ladner Women's Auxiliary reports in this issue that a successful bazaar was held, and that proceeds were voted to the Crippled Children's Hospital and to the Orphans' Christmas Fund.
Last year's UFAWU convention will long be remembered by delegates who were fortunate enough to witness the wonderful display of food prepared by the Vancouver Auxiliary, and, of course, to partake of it.
, Then, there is the visiting committee for members of the Union who are ill in hospital. Those who have been visited are no doubt ardent in their support of the Auxiliary for in some cases, these visitors were among the few they saw. Of course, the ladies always carry a supply of cigarettes and books to help cheer the patients.
But all these efforts, however much they are appreciated, can only be carried through successfully with the support of a large membership. It is impossible for a mere handful to carry out this work in the manner its importance merits.
That is why we appeal to all Union members to speak to their wives and mothers and daughters to encourage them to join the Auxiliary. That is why, too, we appeal directly to the ladies themselves to come out to the Social on Saturday, or to the next meeting, or simply phone the Union Hall at Tatlow 3254 and see what it's all about.
Remember, as an Auxiliary member, you will not only make life more enjoyable for others, but you will also add to your own pleasure and satisfaction.
Boat Cruises, Owner Missing
Jf=Jr=iR
The body of Mike Hancheruck of Steveston whose gillnet fish boat "Juana H" was found cruising unattended in the Strait of Georgia has still not been located.
The boat was discovered 10 days ago near Lasqueti Island by other fishermen in the area who sensed something wrong in the manner in which the gillnetter was travelling.
Failing to see any sign of life on the craft they threw a line
over and went aboard to find the engine set at cruising speed, but no sign of Hancheruck.
An oil can and lanterns on deck made it appear that Hancheruck was preparing lights for the night of fishing and it was thought he might have fallen overboard when the boat hit a swell.
Fishermen reported their discovery at French Creek and a search was carried out from there to the Lasqueti Island area but no clues were found.

Sprinkle fish lightly with salt and lay aside for I hour. Cook onions in separate kettle, then place fish in cold water to which add seasoning. Let boil slowly until almost done. Drain onions and put in saucepan with fish. Drain fish and add balance of ingredients well mixed. Shake saucepan, but do not stir and cook, until fish is well done. MANY years ago, when Slack-Water' Slim was married, he took his bride east on their honeymoon.
On the same train was a number of delegates and their wives, returning from some big convention.
During the night, Slack-Water's bride whispered that sho would have to go to the other end of the car, and expressed her fear that thee wasn't enough light, in the pavss.ge-way for her to find their berth upon her return.
"That's simple." stage-whispered Sla;-k-Water, "I'll just stick one of my long legs out into the a;sle "
On her return, his bride stopped, took one look, th^n screamed in confusion. A leg stuck out into the aisle from every berth.

OCTOBER 18; The troilers have had it for this season and some of the seines have quit, but the gill-net.ters are still making a few dollars. There aru six to eight giil-l>etters in Sutil Channel picking up 500 to 1800 pounds on nights the weather permits. It ir. reported that some are doing well in the Straits, too.
Saw three trailers cannonballing for ling cod off Cape Mutige. but as vet no one seems to be going after cod in a big way in that area.
OCTOBER 25: The .south-east gale on the gulf last night and yesterday gave a-couple of gillnet 'boats quite a vide from Comox. One got into Dr»w Harbor under her own power after having engine trouble. The other was picked up and towed into Quathiaski Cove

"A LOT HAS BEEX SAID and
written about failure of the Adams River run of sockeve," sa\d Swivel-neck. "Many explanations have been offered, but if anyone had been watching closely when the run started, he would have Known the reason for their failure to reach the spawning grounds. Thers was so'much silt in the river this year that sockeye had to swim backwards to keep the sand out of their eyes. The current was too strong for them to make any headway eo they gave up and headed out to sea again."
★ ★ ★ SUNDAY MORNING AT DAWN.
October 8, during the week-end closed period, a seine boat made a set in Johnstone Straits, or perhaps they were just soaking the web. However, though the distance was too great to see the name of the boat, the crew could be seen on the seine table pulling web.
During a previous closed period, two gillnettei-s, casting a small purse-seine from a boat propelled by oars, were fishing all of three days on the flat at the mouth of a creek almost half a mile inside | the fishing limits.
On another occasion, a seine boat set inside the boundary and pursed in all the salmon at the mouth of the spawning grounds, but later, upon being approached by another fishing vessel, agreed to open the seine and let them go.
Mrs. Sid Wilson had a couple of letters in The Fisherman on the subject of creek robbing. She'was advised by one fisherman that she would not make friends by such atricles.

Regardless of whether friends or enemies are made, something will have to be done about the practice of robbing the spawning grounds.
Not all fishermen are poachers. The majority of them realize that their future income is dependant on the fish that get up the streams to spawn. A great many of them make an effort to conserve the fishery. Most of them conform to the regulations: are tied up during the weekly closure.
But those few who are attempting to take advantage of the rest —should they be reported by the other fishermen? No one wants to be a stoolpigeon! They do not want to report and witness against their fellow fishermen. But these few are thieves. Just as much a thief as if they broke into a worker's home or stole his summer's stake. By entering the limits and taking the fish off the spawning grounds, they are destroying the future livelihood of their brother fisheimen and taking the bread from the mouths of their children.
