Bowling Notes
Big Scores Feature First Session
By BILLY DONALDSON
Tuesday, September 5, was the opening of the Mixed Five Pin Bowling League at the Pender Bowling Alleys and although we had made arrangements for a 12 team league, there were several absentees, most notably among the new team from the Canadi an Fishing Company who were only able to field two players.
Some of the absentees were reported as working late. On the other hand, there were several other attractions which would probably affect the attendance—Spike Jones with the Zany Orchestra, etc.
We kind of expected that this would take place on the first night which was declared as a practice night. On checking over some of the scores, which were extraordinarily good, we found that Helen Smith of the C'anfisco Fillets had the very good score of 318 for a single game which topped all the other scores, both ladies and gents.
Other scores were Doug Peck, Challlengers, 245; George Baker, 241; Esther Bellafe, 223; Wayne Temo, (new player) 223; Jimmy Williams, Queen Charlotte Fisheries, 230; Dot Dawson from the
same company, 212; Connie Mc-Ferran from the Coop office, 212. This is the same team for Esther Bellas, Canflsco Fillets, "Dick" 217 (All Players Should Put Their Full Names On The Score Sheets For Registration Purposes Only), Jimmy Demetros 200 and My Loud Speaker at the Coop, 207.
Midway through the games, Bob Hunter of the Alleys said that he would like to see me at the office, and when I had time to get there, I was greatly surprised to hear from him that the management had decided to up the charges to 20 cents a game or in other words 60 cents for the three games. If we were going to put 12 teams in the league, the foul judge fee would be $1.50 per night.
Being troubled with shortness of breath lately, this seemed to make

"The prime minister has already told the House that we do not propose, under conditions as we see them, to embark upon such a course at this time.
"I have already said that direct controls, of themselves, do not cure anything; indeed, they may often do more harm than good. At best,

direct controls can do little more than contain for a time the pressure of demand ; they do not reduce those pressures, nor do they go to the root of the matter . . .
"Secondly, while it is true that direct controls can be begun on a selective basis, it is also true that if the inflationary pressures ar« sustained, they have to be extended rapidly until they embrace almost every aspect of the economy, — prices, wages, salaries, supplies, production, distribution, allocation and rationing . . .
"Thirdly, a widespread system of direct controls, no matter how skilfully and honestly administered, requires a huge and burdensome bureaucracy.
"People do not like controls, and we have to recognize the fact that except in times of great crisis, they will resist them, evade and circumvent, them. You cannot really enforce such controls upon an unwilling people . . . while such controls will be accepted and can be effective in a great crisis, they must be reserved for such periods ...
"As the prime minister has already stated, the government's policy is to counter the inflationary pressures that may be generated by our expanded defense program primarily by fiscal measures supported by such other measures as are appropriate," he concluded.
It is quite clear that Mr. Abbott's estimate of the public's attitude to price controls is based entirely on fantasy.

it worse, because I could hardly reply as I had already informed our players that the charges would be the same as last year (who am I anyway?). Several of the players who were there last week thought it would be advisable to increase our regular bowling fees in order to make up for the extra charges made by the Pender Bowling Management ( according to the dictum of the Bowling Alley Owners Association).
According to other reports handed to me since, other bowling alleys are still charging the old rate of three games for 55 cents. It is hardly right to make any extra charges without ample notice; it does not seem businesslike to me, especially when they were so anxious to have our league membership back at the Pender.
With the increase and our league enlarged to 12 teams, the Alleys would certainly gain whereas we would stand to lose three dollars per night. I feel that it would be quite in order to curtail our season to 22 weeks instead of 33, thereby saving the players a certain amount of expense.
And I think that it is absolutely essential that we discuss this very important question with other matters that must of necessity be decided as soon as possible.
Do not forget that absentees from now on will have to pay their regular bowling fee in order to maintain the prize money. More next week.
