^NE day when Par an' me was afishin' dog-fish livers down around Texady Island an' we got ankerd up in Gillis Bay ter cook up a big feed a red-snapper chowder fer supper, they was one a • them there perlice boats come along side a us an' a big red-faced perliceman said ter Par, "That looks like a right handy good cook ya got there, Mr., how's about borryin' her ter cook our supper fer us?"
Fer just about as long as I kin remember, My Par has rigarded the floatin' arm of the law with the highest dergree a serspicion, as they has bin more'n one hungry fisherman had ter pack a mowitche home after dark, on account a the daylight bein' clouded over by one a them there perlice boats snoopin' around an' it has bin knowed fer certin that some poor fishermen have had ter pay fer meat they never et, cause some mean perliceman took it all away with him ter use fer evidence in court.
Anyhow, Par says, "Yes, the lass here aint no mean cook as long as they is anything aboard ter cook up, but I don't nohow berlieve that you fellas is around lookin' fer cooks, now jist what have yet got on yer minds, anyhow?"
The big red-faced reprisentative of the law ast Par if he had any fire-arms on his boat an' Par says, "No, I aint got no rifles er pistols er slung-shots neither an' I am

jist fresh outa shotgun shells; has you fellas got any ter spare?"
Now, seein' as how we got sich distinguishable company, I had rushed down below an' was changin' inter somethin' ter be more persentible an' no sooner did I get my slacks off, than the big fella opened up our door ter make a search an' when he seen how embarrassed I was, his mouth flew open ter say somethin' an' he quick got outa there an' I heard him attellin' Par "Come on aboard, old man, an' get yerself some shotgun shells, we got plenty."
Bime-bye I hear'd the ingine start up in the perlice boat an' Par come back aboard the "White Rose No. 4" with his hat plum fulla shotgun shells an' they looked like durn good ones too.
Boy, was that ever one grand snapper chowder we had fer supper an' afterwards when Par got steam up in his pipe, he says, "Lass, I love yer like a kitten. Why, thet durn cop mighta glom-med onto my old sea-lion exterminator an' besides, yer kin cook betterin Mar can, an' besides, she never wears them slack rigs neither."
TT FER sure, is one pretty sight ter see all the fishermen a headin' north fer sock-eye fishin' every year an' I delight in goin' out on the point an' watch them boats an' I like ter specalate on jist what kinda fishermen is in them.
Fer instunce, here comes a boat that looks a lot like Par's boat an' I betcha that fella's got his exhaust pipe all haywired up an' yer can't see his ingine fer grease an' oil. I'll betcha that fella didn't have money ernough ter git outa town an' he had ter go to a fishin' company fer relief an' I betcha the cannery maniger tole him he'd best do better this year or the company'd take his boat away from him an' I betcha he knows durn well, that the maniger is bluffin', cause they aint no company'd want ter git stuck with a white clcfunt likeNthat boat. difference is, that fella aint My Par.
Here comes another boat—let's see what I kin make outa him. Well now, this fella's boat travels like sixty an' is all slicked up like a kid on his way ter Sunday School an' I can tell by the size of his drum, that he's one a them there fish hogs that can't fish inside a the inlets on account they jist aint room ernough fer him to get set crostways an' consequently he fishes outside an gits the first crack at the fish.
OY, jist look at that fella way out there in thet fancy cruiser with the spray flyin' seven ways fer Sunday an' the sun is flashin' off alia them there chrome fittin's. I'll jist betcha dollars ter do-nuts, that he's one a them there suit salesmen on his way north ter go afishin' up a mess a suckers. Helmer bought a suit offa one a them guys a couple years back an' it shrunk so bad thet he give it ter one a the boys ter wear away ter high school.
Over there comes two boats tied tergether an' it looks like they're right soshuble guys. I kin see they got a kid steerin' an' they is two guys playin' poker out on deck an' they is somethin' in a bottle which these two fellas is takin turns adrinkin' at. I betcha them fellas doesn't care if it snows, blows er freezez an' they'll git their share of them sockeyes this summer too.
I always throw a kiss ter them beats aheadin' north an' I wish them all the best a luck in their travels an' I know that Par is gonna be two weeks late agittin' north agin this year. That's My Par. Mar always says, "Lass, yer granny tole me that yer Par was borned two weeks later than his scheduled arrival."
U.S. Union Fishermen Wind Up Anti-Trust Law Case In Court
SAN FRANCISCO: Winding up*~ the anti-trust law troubles of Northern California commercial fishermen, members of the Longshoremen's Union, local unions were fined and seven officials given one-year sentences this month by Federal Judge Murphy on "nolo contendre" (concontest) pleas.
The ILWU union locals are now operating on a totally different collective bargaining program establishing a strict employer-employee relationship with the fish dealers, as compared to the traditional bargaining practices which became untenable under the anti-union attack of the Justice Department's Anti-Trust Division.
Judge Murphy fined San Francisco Local 3-34 the sum of S3000, Pittsburgh Local 3-35 the sum of $500 and the former Fort Bragg local, which withdrew from ILWU, the sum of $1000.
SUSPENDED SENTENCE
The suspended jail sentences were imposed on Jeff Kibre, secretary of the ILWU Fishermen & Allied Workers Division; Secretary John Pastorino, San Francisco; Rosalie Norton, Pittsburgh; Bert K. Bean, Bodega Bay: Reed Haas, Eureka; Myron Lind, Crescent City, and Ray Welsh, Fort Bragg.
The cases against the Bodega Bay, Eureka and Crescent City locals were put off calendar indefinitely by Judge Murphy on a showing by the union that these locals were no longer operative insofar as'the fishermen are concerned. The anti-trust prosecutions had resulted in destruction of the local unions.
The Justice Department had demanded whopping big fines totaling $16,500 against the unions and individuals. In presenting the issues to the
A SMALL BOY was asked by his mother what he would like for a present. He said he would like more than anything else a baby sister. Just as it happened, his mother was able to oblige him.
The next year, the boy was asked again what he would like for a present. He hesitated, and then said:
"Well, Mummy, I hardly like to bother you again."
"Tell me what you would like, deai-," insisted his mother.
"Well, it might be too much for you. Last year I asked for a baby sister and you gave me one. This year—well, I would like a pony, please."
"DO YOU SAY your prayers every night, Trudy?" asked the minister.
"Oh no; Mummy says them for
me," answered Trudy.
"Indeed: and what does she say?" he queried.
"Thank God you're in bed!" was the prompt reply.
WIFE, ASKED BY a Judge if her drinking husband ever tried Alcoholics Anonymous: "I guess so, Your Honor. He'll drink anything."

judge, George Andersen, ILWU attorney, stated that the new contract forms being used by the union were employer - employee in character, that Superior Judge Molkenbuhr of San Francisco had ruled the contract was not in vio-lation- of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, and that he had received informal assurances from the government to the same effect.
"The Justice Department's Anti-Trust Division secured the indictment of the wrong persons for violating the Sherman Anti-Trust Act in the fishing industry," Kibre stated, in commenting on the sentences meted out on the plea of nolo contendere.
"The real price-fixers in violation of anti-trust laws are the fish dealers who have acted in close concert down through the years to fix how little compensation the fishermen should get for their labor," continued Kibre. ANTI-UNION DEAL
"But the Justice Department, instead of going after the real price-fixers who determine how much the housewife pays for fish, went after poor working fishermen who were only seeking to get a fair return for their labor through collective bargaining. In fact, there was an obvious 'deal' to get the union; the Justice Department called in all the fish dealers to testify before the grand jury, thereby giving them immunity under the anti-trust laws.
"We plead nolo contendere because many months ago we revised our collective bargaining procedure. We abandoned the traditional bargaining methods that had existed in the industry for a half century, and established new ones. The old method involved in the indictment, therefore, became a dead issue which the union did not wish to fight through a long, highly expensive trial.
"The fishermen's locals of the ILWU are determined to continue
fighting for a fair deal. Our demand now is for a contract clearly establishing an employer-employee relationship. We have such a contract now in effect on the Sacre-mento River, and this was recently ruled legal and not in violation of anti-trust laws by Superior Judge Molkenbuhr in San Francisco.
"The major fish dealers, however, are still refusing to sign such a contract and are insisting on putting the fishermen in a status where they will either have to accept what little the dealers may offer, or else will be in violation of the anti-trust, laws.
"The fishermen refuse to be second-class citizens and insist on collective bargaining rights as producing workers, the same as all other workers."
