THE FISHERMAN
October 2, 1951
By FISHER LASS
HELMER Swanson told Par about a couple of good float logs driftin around up the inlet a piece and as Par still had a few inches of gas left in his tank on the "White Rose No. 4," we all decided to go an pick up them logs an sorta make a picnic seein as how the chuck was smoother'n a politician's surface. 1 Mar set a bowl of jello out on*
deck to set and she orung along , ^frr? £™las!KW£! a newspaper which she had bum ta mcur
med from the parson Switzenbur-ger fer readin' to kill time with.
After we had got under way, Mar, she planked herself down on the hatch to read and Par grabbed the funnies, leavin' me to steer. Pretty soon I seen Mar pointin' at somethin' in the pap'er an' tryin' ta get Par interestid so I went out on deck to steer where I could hear better what was goin' on cause Mar seemed so emphatic.
"Well," says Mar, "I'd fer sure like to git down ta Vancouver so 1 could see what a Princess an' a Duke looks like, I ain't never had no proper chance fer meetin' up with any Royalty nohow; last time when Royalty came ta this coast we was so bustid, I couldn't afford to take in the sights an' it fer sure looks like this time we ain't no richer."
"Yeh," says Par, "finanshully speakin', we ain't none too well fixed which sometimes proves danged embarrisin', like this morn-in' when I went to the store fer a roll of snoose on credit. Ya know, Mar, thet thistle-chinned Highlander of a storekeeper only let me hev one box an' he told me thet henceforth our credit has bin vetoed by him, the dawgonned skinflint."
"Par," says ■ Mar, "thet there snoose stuff must be hard on yer constitution an' besides, it ain't essentials neither, but it ain't every day by a long shot thet we kin be lucky ernough ta have Royalty in our Tnidst. Durnit Par, why cain't we never .git no chance ta rub shoulders with some famous people fer a change?"
"Well, Mar," says Par, "maybe it's all in the way ya size folks up. Personally and ta my notion, I git a bigger lift outa meetin' up with some old friends we ain't seen fer quite a spell, like say, the last time Albert Duffy come ta our house and now I hear poor Albert is dead an' gone up there in the Queen Charlotte Islands an' he has

passing an' 1 bete they ain't no Royalty -in the whole world ever treated his friends with more feeling and sympathy than did Albert Duffy an' he never had no special car to ride on the railroads neither."
"Jist the same, Par," Mar comes back with, "it'd sure be a mighty big pleasure to see thet there Royalty an' then come back ta our town and brag about it to the neighbors tho, wouldn't it now Par?"
lOAR wasn't much impressed '-"-^ by Mar's ideas an he leaned over to pull inboard a tire fender which was draggin' an' slowin' the "White Rose No. 4" down to a crawl.
When Par bent down, his one and only box of snuff rolled out of

Spareribs in Sweet Sour Sauce
Every household should have a few good specialty dishes that appear as real novelties. You may observe that besides the thoroughly fluffy rice (this was the new, pre-cooled packaged rice we used), we suggest thin, well-marinated cucumber slices and toasted and salted almonds.
The proportion of sauce is generous—you'll be glad.
Yield—4 servings. Wipe with damp cloth . 2 pounds pork spareribs and cut into one-rib pieces. Cover with
boiling water and simmer, covered, 10 minutes. Drain thoroughly and dry pieces of meat with paper towel. Brown pork ribs in
a little heated salad oil and drain off excess fat. Peel and finely chop
1 medium-sized piece root ginger and add to
1 clove garlic which has been peeled and crushed. Mix in
4 tablespoons flour
Vi teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon salt
'A cup granulated sugar 4 tablespoons of soya sauce Vz cup vinegar
2 cups water
and pour over browned spareribs. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, 20 minutes. Serve on a bed of fluffy rice.

his pocket and upset into Mar's bowl of nice soft jello which was on the deck. "Dera my luck to soandso," says Par, "thet dem jello hes made an awful heck of a mess of my snoose and here's me with, nlry credit at the store vetoed and yer Mar with her head full of Royalty."
Par's bin scanning the sky fer a good many days now lookin' fer a rain cloud through the smoke an' one day he says ta ma, "Heck, lass, I cain't help but wonder what the gillnetters has done ta deserve this kinda treatment from the heavens. If it don't soon rain, the fisheries department'll hev ta give us a job wheelin spawnin' fish up the cricks in wheelbarrows, to save them from the crick robbers." As an afterthought, Par added, 'Even the trout in our well gives me a dirty look ever time I draw a bucket of drinkin' water."
Iaint never told you about the time Par got soakin wet in the rain while we was dog-fishin' an' how he chased me out on deck while he changed clothes.
Well, Par hung his Stanfields underpants up on a loose nail ber-hind the ingine fer drying them out and when I went back inta the cabin agin I accidently knocked them underpants down after we got headed fer home and the first we knew thet anything had gone amiss was when the ingine begin ta snort and stopped dead.
Par looked down ta find what the trouble was an when he seen his underpants with one leg hung up on the grease cup on the stuffing box an 'the other leg wound up in the water pump gears and all the middle wrapped around the shaft like a gillnet gets wrapped around a dog fish, I expectid him ta blow a fuse.
Par looked at them underpants an' then he looked up at me an' startid in ta grin, "Them gosh durned rigs was fittin' pretty tight anyhow lass, they needed a real good stretchin' like this so they'd fit proper." When we had rescued them drawers, Par got out his fish guttin knife and bucked about a foot off each leg an' when he held them up, the waist band still reached all the vfays up to his chin. * * * *
Once I asked Par if he'd ever bin shipwrecked an' Par answered, "Only once, lass," an' he went on to say, "It was on a beautiful moonlight night that we were cast up on a nice sandy beach in a scream-in' norwester; they was a nifty young blonde and I, but the heck of it was, thet yer Mar was there, too."

Par and me was discussin' the war in Korea and what a tough time the Yankkks would have Ai they had to kill all of the enemy in order ta achieve lastin' victory. Par says, "It's jist like the time a pack of wolves took after two little rabbits an' one little rabbit turned ta the other one and suggestid. "WHAT SAY WE STOP FER A M I N NIT AND OUTNUMBER THEM YANKS, (PARDON, 1 MEAN WOLVES)."
Skidegate Local Meets At Q.C. City
By CHARLIE VALLEY
A meeting of the Skidegate local was held in September at the Community Hall with Art Husband in the chair. The secretary, Ed. Reg-nery, gave an outline on what was to come before the meeting. That the weighing boats were not on the job, the companies were not cooperating, that the harbor was lacking in tieing-up facilities.
Introduced to the meeting were Tom Parkin, northern representative, and 'Bob Hannah, UFAWU organizer. Tom Parkin was elected by the meeting to go and see the authorities in Prince Rupert about the progress toward getting floats for Queen Charlotte City. He was also instructed to call on Mr. Ap-plewhaite, M.P. for Skeena, to tell him in no uncertain terms that the fishermen were not getting the representation they expected of him. Floats for Queen Charlotte City for summer and winter have been petitioned for by everybody in and around these parts. On other requests, he has been IScking in representing the fishermen and the community views.
On the issue of the Japanese Peace Treaty, he had the effrontery to teli the fishermen that the clause that dealt with fish-

WHEN ELMER FUDGEHEAD,
a Mortimer Snerd type, applied for the position of an Insurance Salesman, the boss man wasn't too greatly impressed. He told Elmer that he was quite sure he wouldn't be able to make any sales.
However, Elmer wasn't to be dismayed easily, so he picked up some blank insurance policies and set forth. Two days later he was back with all the policies signed.
Plunking them down on the boss's desk, he beamed triumphantly and said? "Daw, how bout the job now?"
Taken aback the boss fumbled for some excuse, he stammered, "Why man, you just can't go out and get policies signed, we've got to know something about the health of the people we insure. In fact we have to obtain a sample, before we can okay a policy."
With a "Daw, okay boss," Elmer grabbed an armful of the bottles and rushed out of the office. Two days later he was back with all the bottles filled, and carrying a pail full of liquid.
"What's in the pail," asked the annoyed boss.
"Just sold a group policy," said Elmer.

eries was not very important.
Tom Parkin was pleased to know that the UFAWU membership was growing; that its membership were taking an active interest. This, he said, is what counts when it comes to 'bargaining with the operators. This year's prices are better for chums and pinks but the only trouble now is to get the weighing of seine-caught fish. The weigh boats were here but no one has seen them.
Bob Hannah spoke and followed up on much that was said giving instances where the companies were trying to discourage the weighing of seine fish. At Granite Bay and a few other places where the fishermen were insistent, things were very satisfactory and any volume of fish can be handled — that he had seen it. He could see in this district, referring to harbor facilities, that the political situation needed remedying. When your member calls around again, make these issues plain to him. If he is representing the people on the Queen Charlottes, why has he failed?
Mr. Hannah also explained some new changes on the radio band. These proposed changes were not complete. They would be published later. That channel 2182 was to be reserved for distress calls. Shore stations such as lighthouse 2118 channel as distress calls. In these two channels which way it would be worked out, might take away or add to the ship to ship radios. He was mentioning these so that the fishermen might get some idea what was happening.
Mr. Hannah and Mr. Parkin were
planning to make a cruise around, the southern part of the islands, calling at all the fishing camps and getting acquainted with fishermen and the fishing grounds.
Fishing News
Up to date (September 16),very few fish have been taken by seiners. The gillnetters are doing fair to good. Skidegate Inlet gillnet-ting fair, elsewhere light. Trolling out in Hecate Straits was good last week. Fair around Rennell Sound, elsewhere poor.

This is true of every race with tradition behind it.

Our Judge miserably failed in his duty. He even didn't stop on the main point that murder was committed on the grounds of hatred of foreigners and their language and to give proper instructions and drastic warning. He proved himself crystal clear as unfit to administer justice, peace and unity.
When I speak this for myself, I am quite certain to express sentiments of thousands who feel and think exactly the same as I do.
