Free trade a disaster, say Ucluelet workers
Ottawa's decision to enter a free trade agreement is having "a disastrous impact on our jobs and communities," UFAWU shoreworkers in Ucluelet declared in an open letter to the federal government May 13.
The letter, signed by more than 90 plant workers, was read out by UFAWU Local 48 member Bob Walton at the May 15 rally against the North American Free Trade Agreement organized by the Action Canada Network.
The following is the text of the letter, together with the names of those who signed it:
We, the undersigned, are fish plant workers at two fish plants in Ucluelet, B.C. The decision of the federal government to enter into a free trade agreement is having a disastrous impact on our jobs and our community.
The fish you see in front of you comes from our community. For us, this fish represents the key to the economic survival of our families and our community. If we harvest this fish properly and process it in Canadian plants with B.C. workers, it will

provide more than 300 direct jobs in Ucluelet. We are also taxpayers and when we are working, our taxes provide for roads, schools, medicare and other vital public services for British Columbians. This fish also represents the waste of human and natural resources which has
resulted from ■j$ iJH the free trade mj% deal. Today the federal government says we cannot stop U.S. fish companies from taking unprocessed fish south of the border. Last year, more than 200 employees worked on hake production which was allocated to our plants. This year the government says it is illegal under free trade to have a "domestic" allocation.
Canada is already losing 35 per cent of its groundfish to the U.S. We demand that the federal government take action to defend Canadians and their industries, including the very important fishing industry. We also demand that the North American Free Trade Agreement be shelved and further, that Canada serve notice it will withdraw from free trade with the U.S. This must happen if fishing communities like Ucluelet are to survive.
