Urge Sinclair Talk Trade
Officials of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers' Union have suggested that federal minister of fisheries James Sinclair explore trade possibilities with Russia during his visit there in conjunction with the International Whaling Commission meeting.
Mr. Sinclair left Ottawa last week for the conference and his arrival will mark the first time a Canadian cabinet minister has visited that country.
His jumping off point will be Vancouver from which city he will fly the new polar route to Amsterdam July 8, travelling from there by train. The Whaling Com mission meeting open July 18 in Moscow.
Apart from the whaling conference, Mr. Sinclair said he is anxious to meet the Russian peo pie generally and particularly Russian fishermen. He wants to "see how they work, how they play and how they educate their child ren."
After the conference Mr. Sin clair hopes to take the trans-Siberian railway to the Siberian coast to see Russian salmon, crab and whaling operations.
The minister is qu6ted as stat ing he ''would certainly accept an j invitation to meet the Soviet j heads." He could make his mission' to Moscow historic were he to take up such matters as trade which could provide employment for Canadian workers.
Good Early Salmon Fishing Found by Japanese Vessels
Early season fishing of the Cafeh per shackle per set Japanese high seas salmon fleet ranged from 3.2 to 4.9 fish on
produced excellent catches
Through May 24, the last date for which figures were available at presstime, the catch was 4,506,559 fish.
While this was only 9.5% of the target of 47,296,000 fish, Japanese observers were con-
the report date; but had run higher at times.
Fishing intensity has been stepped-up sharply, not only as a result of larger number of ships and fishing vessels, but
fident that the good beginning also as result of a mechanisa-would make full attainment of tion of net hauling.
the target catch a virtual certainty.
The May 24 catch was composed of:
Sockeye ................ 1,793,065
Chum .................... 2,687,463
Pink..................... 24,655
Cohoe .................... 9
Spring .................... 1,367
Thanks to the installation of power net rollers on the fishing vessels, 200 shackles of net are being drifted at one time this season, as against 150 to 160 shackles in the past.
A company officer reports that the increase in the average size of gillnet boats used this year is being reflected in larger catch per boat.

American Research Vessel Studies North Pacific Salmon
The United States fisheries exploration vessel "John N. Cobb" left Seattle late in June for the North Pacific to gather data on salmon in the Gulf of Alaska and adjacent offshore waters.
The research craft is expected to return September 20, giving it three months to carry on studies.
Details of the trip and its objectives are lis.ted in a despatch from the Fish and Wildlife Service Fishery Products report.
Location of Exploratory and Experimental Fishing: Offshore waters of the north Pacific and Gulf of Alaska at a series of pre-designated stations extending from off northern Vancouver Island to off Unalaska Island, Alaska.
Objectives: To obtain information on the highseas distribution, abundance, life history, racial composition, etc., of north Pacific salmon in the Gulf of Alaska and adjacent offshore waters; to catch salmon on the high seas in condition for tagging and to collect salmon from various localities for studies of racial determination, size composition, age analysis, and other related data and to make oceanographic observations in connection with the fishing activities.
Methods: Primary fishing gear will be nylon gill nets of various mesh sizes designed to catch both
mature and immature salmon. A series of east-west transects will be run across the Gulf .of Alaska with fishing stations at 60-mile intervals. Special attention will be given to an area south-east of Kodiak Island which is reported to be rich in plankton. A limited amount of experimental fishing will be done with surface long lines and trolling gear in addition to the gillnets.
Scientific personnel from the Branch of Fishery Biology and from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington, will participate in the research. All salmon caught in suitable condition will be tagged and released.
Morphometric measur eraents, stomach analysis, blood samples, and other biological data will be obtained. Oceanographic observations, including water samples, temperatures, etc., will be taken at each fishing station and at other regular intervals.
This is a part of the research program" approved by the International North Pacific Fisheries Commission. Liaison will be maintained when possible between the 'Cobb" and other research vessels operating in nearby waters.
Information obtained will be coordinated with that of other agencies carrying out research on North Pacific salmon.
