'Left-Wing Local' Label Attempt at Suppression
^CCORDING to a Canadian Press press report, as published by The Vancouver Sun, a left-wing local of the Trades and Labor Congress failed in an attempt to have the TLC admit communist-led unions. The left-wing local referred to is Local 312 of Ocean Falls.
Now Local 312 does not mind being referred to as a left-wing local if by the qualification were meant that we are progressive, because we have always been proud of being progressive and will remain so in spite of all the poppycock published by writers who for their bread and butter have t'o write to please their employers.
However, being referred to as left-wingers for some years now seems to imply that one is a communist or fellow-traveller, so-called, by most of those who think it is to their advantage t'o kow-tow to the ones who pull the economic and political strings.
To put the minds of the kow-towers at ease and remove their fear (you can come out' from under your bed now), and in order to prevent misconceptions by the readers of The United .Worker, the official organ of Local 312 and 360, we wish to state that there' are no communists in the leadership of the two locals, nor is the leadership controlled by any communists of the rank and file, if there are any, which we doulbt. However, the leadership of the two locals and the membership are not afraid to stand for freedom and state so whenever the occasion arises.
The two unions in Ocean Falls are not merely paying lip service to freedom like so many delegates to the TLC conventions who claim to stand for freedom and then back any reactionary policy or stand their leaders wish to dictate to them. We recall the convention in Calgary when a delegate stated- that his delegation was told how to vote on a certain matter if they wished to retain their jobs. We may have our faults but we haven't sunk that low as yet.
It was President Eisenhower who said not' so long ago that freedom means that we should allow freedom of expression even to those with whom we violently disagree. Dr. MacKenzie, President of the B.C. University, made a similar statement, yet neither of them are called left-wingers, but when a trade union member takes a similar stand, and is out to practice what he preaches, he is termed a left-winger. The term has become a convenient method to silence anyone who says something with which a reactionary trade union member or leader disagrees.
The present trend of reaction was started not very long upon conclusion of World War II. It was originated by the American Manufacturers' Association and certain reactionaries in the U.S. government and was eagerly followed by the Canadian Manufacturers' Association. It was most likely inspired by the fear that returning veterans might be sweeping the two countries into a period of pro-gressiveness. To fight this possibility people had to be made afraid of something, and therefore everybody who was progressive was labeled as a communist, left-winger or fellow traveler.
And well did these money men succeed when they even were able to enroll the large labor organisations in Canada and the U.S.A. into their following. Well, we can understand the purpose of the money men to* steer towards reaction, but' we have never been able to understand how labor leaders, who are supposed to be progressive-minded, swallowed the bait of the industrial leaders, hook, line and sinker.
We here in Ocean Falls will keep on being progressive, in spite of any reactionary policies pursued by TLC and CCL, now combined in the Canadian Labor Congress. Yes, even in spite of what paid press writers say. We have a name for those who sell their soul for writing to please their bosses, but we had better not mention it here, because we might be up for libel.
By the way, the reason why Local 312 was called a left-wing local was a resolution requesting that' the TLC allow affiliation of all bona fide trade unions regardless of the personal beliefs of their members or officers. The federal government, which we often criticise, allows any person with any belief to become a Member of Parliament, but the "progressive" TLC wishes to screen the trade unions. What a departure from the original freedom.

"HAVE YOU anything to say in your defence before sentence is pronounced against you?" asked the judge.
"Only one thing," said the convicted burglar. "The only thing I objected to in this trial was being identified by a man that kept his head under the bed-clothes the whole time I was in the room."

ACCORDING to a Seattle report will be 50 feet in width and 150 Goode wants to go around in rose-
contained in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Bulletin (Friday, July 8): "Seattle canned salmon dealers are reluctant, to submit prices either on new stocks or stocks remaining from the 1954 pack. Brokers at Seattle would not verify canned salmon prices quoted for 1954 stocks one week ago," the report continues. Reason for this policy is given as the "uncertainty of the 1955 canned salmon pack and the poor reports regarding the Alaska canned salmon pack to date."

I see they are laying the steel girders for the new home of Western Marine Supply, now located at 558 Powell Street. The plant, which is going up a few doors west' of the present location, will be completed in the fall. According to Company president Tony Vick, the building will he one of the most modern and up-to-date. It
feet deep. The firm will be adding colored blinkers^ we suppose that's
many new lines to its present stock and plans to take on additional employees to give the fishermen one stop service for everything in marine supplies.

Tom Goode has criticised the CBC for admitting in a broadcast beamed at Poland that Canada has problems of racial and religious discrimination. Goode is clearly the type of politician who believes it is quite all right to lie if it is going to help your cause. Alberni Cana! Area Reopens Wednesday
The section of Alberni Canal inside a line drawn at Brooksby Point will be reopened this Wednesday, July 13, at 6 p.m. following improved sockeye escapement on the Somass River system.
Closure was put into effect July 1 when it was feared supplies might not be heavy enough for adequate spawning but with the Barkley Sound fishing effort yielding better catches and larger numbers of sockeye noted at' Stamp and Sproat Falls, the opening has been ordered by chief supervisor of fisheries A. J. Whitmore.
