TED SJOBLOM
. . . lifelong trade unionist
Union Member Critically III
Members of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union will be sorry to hear that one of their number, Ted Sjoblom of Sunbury, is seriously ill at home.
Ted, possibly the most popular fish buyer on the British Columbia coast, has distinguished himself over the years for his integrity and intense devotion not only to the Union as such but to the principles of trade unionism.
The latest instance was during the attacks on the UFAWU by scab elements who obtained an injunction forcing Ted at least in theory, to accept fish from a scab gillnetter.
Ted's attitude was clear, straightforward, and unmistake-able: "They can put me in jail if they like, but I'll never take fish from a scab," and he didn't, court order or no court order.
Ted came from Finland in 1924, starting off in the Sapperton district of New Westminster, where he lived for five years before moving to Sunbury. And Sun-bury it has been ever since for the 62-year-old fish buyer whose fishermen are mainly his neighbors and friends.
Ted started gillnetting on the Skeena River in 1926 and fished there for four seasons before trying Rivers Inlet and the Fraser.
In 1942, he began collecting for Great West Cannery with the "May S 3," starting with the United Fishermen's Co-op the following year.
By 1947, he was operating three collectors, two of them his own, the "May S 3" and the "Adina." He was on the Co-op board of directors at the time.
Late in 1947, he started to buy for Westminster Fish, and has been buying for the same company ever since.
Ted became ill late last year, undergoing an operation on November 10 but returning home later the same month. He is still at home but has shown no improvement since the operation.
Ted Sjoblom is an outstanding example of a good Union man, a fisherman who was in the Union whenever there was a Union in the industry. He was a delegate to the Pacific Coast Fishermen's Union conventions of 1939 and 1941, and the pictures of these gatherings are among his prized possessions.
His great many friends in the fishing industry extend their sincerest good wishes to Ted Sjoblom, a man who has the deepest respect of his fellow unionists in the B.C. fishing industry.

DENIAL, PLATES
ers, the following proposals are of special interest:
• The owner or operator of an establishment shall obtain a
recently issued medical certificate of health from each person in his employ engaged in processing or packaging or handling of fish or shellfish. Such certificate shall be renewed annually.
• No person suffering from any communicable disease or who
has an infected wound or open lesion on any portion of the body shall be employed in a working area of an establishment.
• All persons engaged in the handling, processing or packaging of fish or shellfish shall wash their hands thoroughly with an approved soap followed by a disinfectant dip before commencement of work and after each absence from duty.
• The wearing of fingernail polish by operating employees
who handle processed fish or shellfish with the bare hands shall not be permitted.
• Protective hand covering shall be washed and disinfected at
least four times daily.
• All operating employees except filleters, skinners and
handlers on the wharf shall wear clean smocks or coats, and shall wear caps or other protective headgear of an approved type.
• Filleters, skinners and handlers shall wear clean outer
garments and waterproof aprons or coats, or pants and jackets and shall wear caps or other protective headgear of an approved ( type. All waterproof garments shall be properly cleaned after each work shift.
• All utensils coming in contact
with processed fish or shellfish shall be cleaned and washed with cold water and then hot water of at least 170 degrees F. and an approved cleaning agent, at least hourly. At the end of working day the utensils shall be cleaned, air dried and stored in a sanitary manner.
The proposals stipulate that all equipment coming in contact with processed fish or shellfish shall be cleaned and washed at least twice each shift while floors in wet working areas must be treated the same four times a day and disinfected daily.
Equipment such as table surfaces other than cutting surfaces, tanks, containers, trays, and other similar items must be constructed of "non-corrosive metal or other approved material."
It is also provided that "Processing, other than freezing, of products not intended for human consumption shall not be carried out at the same time in any room where fish is being processed for human food."
According to chief supervisor of fisheries A. J. Whitmore, "It is anticipated that if these voluntary proposals with possible modifications are acceptable to the industry as a whole, they will go into effect on a voluntary basis for an adequate trial period and would then form the basis for new regulations regarding construction, maintenance, and operation of fish processing plants under the fish inspection act."
Joint Weighing Trio Goes North
The joint weighing committee representing the Fisheries Association, the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union, and the weights and measures department left for Prince Rupert Monday to check weighing devices in northern herring operations.
The three-man committee whose expenses are paid jointly by the Union and companies under terms of the herring settlement last fall, has completed its study of weighing machinery in lower mainland operations.
Scheduled for study is equipment at North Pacific (Anglo B.C. Packing); Port Edward (Nelson's, and Seal Cove (B.C. Packers), all of them in the Prince Rupert area.
After Prince Rupert will come Butedale (Canadian Fish) and Namu (B.C. Packers) completing the coastwise tour.
Union representative on the committee, organiser Carl Liden, will visit Bella Bella before returning to Vancouver. While there, he will install the charter of the Union Local at Bella Bella in a special ceremony.
Delegates Named To Resources Meet
Two delegates and two alternates have been named by the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union to attend the B.C. Natural Resources Conference scheduled to take place February 20, 21, and 22 in Victoria's Empress Hotel. Delegates are T. Buck Suzuki and Barney Mad-sen with Glen McEachern and Harold Wilcox alternates.
In naming delegates, the Union also decided to write Conference secretary D. B. Turner requesting that a spokesman for the UFAWU be placed on the panel set up to discuss the fisheries question.
The Union has for many years been represented at the Natural Resources Conference and last year secretary Homer Stevens took part in the discussion stage of the panel.
The current request is that the Union be placed on the panel and prepare a paper for presentation to the conference in line with the main theme: "utilisation of primary resources, agriculture, fisheries, forestry, mining."
The Fisherman will be represented at the conference by editor George North.
