Memo to Mr. Hahn:
MPs May Come and Go But Right to Strike Will Stay
SOME extremely dangerous sentiments were voiced in the House of Commons last month by the federal member for New Westminster just a few days after the railway strike had been settled.
Social Credit MP George Hahn delivered himself of a speech in the House on January 14 in which he urged that legislation be introduced that would put an end to strikes and lockouts.
"I submit that we should not prorogue or adjourn parliament until such time as we have brought in labor legislation which will prevent such lockouts or stoppages of work or strikes in the future. That is what the people of Canada expect us to do, certainly not to permit the continuation of strikes or lockouts at the leisure or pleasure of certain groups," the MP stated.
Earlier in his speech, Mr. Hahn' said much the same thing but at that time neglected to include lockouts as one of the ''evils" he wished to have wiped out. "I am sure the people of this country feel it is high time that we should take certain steps to see to it that the problem of strikes and walkouts is resolved, and that they should not be subjected to any further inconvenience of this kind." ,
There are two possible explanations for Mr. Hahn's remarks: either he is painfully naive, or he believes in the kind of legislation which would place organised labor in shackles.
The right to strike is inherent in democracy; it was one of the first rights snatched away by Hitler in fascist Germany. Its removal is almost basic to establishing a dictatorship.
Mr. Hahn, of course, seeks to clothe his remarks in the garb of impartiality by including lockouts as undesirable but the garment he has chosen is rather filmy.
He might just as well say that a boost in the price of milk affects an employer exactly the same as it does his poorest employee because they both have the same number of children.
-Organised labor has fought hard for the right to strike, a right that is always in jeopardy when demagogues take power.. Men and women have made great sacrifice for that right to be recognised in law. They will not easily surrender it.
Without the right to refuse to work collectively, workers would indeed be in a helpless economic position, a fact which makes the union movement guard most zealously this right.
Such statements as those made by Mr. Hahn are cause for concern, and even alarm, in the ranks of organised labor, particularly since they have not been repudiated by the party he represents.
We say unequivocally that people who advocate abrogation of the right to strike have no place in our Canadian parliament.

Speech to the Shareholders
Ladies and gents, fellow coupon-clippers!
Now that you've stuffed yourselves with stewed kippers,
I have a hot message I mean you to hear
About a gay plot we are hatching this year.
My name is A. Rotter; excited I am, Proposing our project, the Moranmore Dam. Cheap power it brings us, from mountains to sea, A gift from the great Moranmore Company.
That Fraser's alt riot, that Fraser's all rapid;
Let it sweep a sweet vision at faces so vapid!
Soon mills, stores, and fact'ries will mushroom before us;
Cheap power! Cheap haha! Come join in my chorus:
There is power, power, wonder-working power,
In that stream, in our scheme I
There is power, power, wonder-working power,
In our million-dollar dream !
My eyes are dim, I cannot see, t For / have got blank cheques with me, For I have got blank cheques with me.
Are there fish who won't bite on the profit-bent hook? Do soft-hearts cry "salmon"? you'll not be foresook. The proteins we lose we'll regain to the full: A Shangri-La there will raise plenty of bull.
Besides, in my pal Dr. Wantem's wise head Are schemes by the score for the sockeyes' safe bed Seven hundred feet up on the Moranmore's wall. The experts were stumped; but he fooled them all.
And men speak of livelihoods wasted and such;
But think of the money! almost at your touch
(If you're Growler and Greedy, that is); ah, 'tis fate!
The Fraser's the nearest, the Fraser can't wait
(Or we can't); Sing out as I dangle the bait:
There is power, power, wonder-working power,
In that stream, in our scheme !
There is power, power, wonder-working power,
In our million-dollar dream !
My eyes are dim, I cannot see, Those kippers play the heck with me, Those kippers play the heck ! ! with me.

League Race Tight
There was nothing much in the way of outstanding efforts on the bowling front last week unless a 265 high single for men and a 249 for women can be considered sensational.

Those were the scores racked up by Wilf Baker representing the male contingent and Helen Kean the more shapely section of the bowling league.
Others who showed their form were the two consistent old timers Helen Smith (239) and Dot Eckman (230), and Paul Harder (245) with Ray Buckberry just a point behind (244).
League president Wilf Baker reports that he is starting to shop for 1957 trophies, what with only 11 weeks to go before we hit the playoff trail.
And speaking of playoffs, just look at this week's standings and see if you can pick the two teams that will join the Sockeyes and Shrimps in the four team finals.
Most of the bowlers at last week's games were talking about Eddie Peterson, who left on a holiday trip last December 28 and had not been heard from
But Monday, we received word that apparently he has showed up in Saskatoon. He wired the company for an extension of his leave of absence due to illness. It has been granted to the end of this month.

^FL-CIO president George Meany, has some ideas on coexistence: ''Coexistence is a fraud," he says. We take it that this means we can't coexist with the Russians or others whose form of government differs from ours.
That is a strange sentiment for a trade union leader for the basis of trade unionism is coexistence between the workers and employers. Mind you, Mr. Meany has more in common with the big employer than most workers since he is himself a wealthy man with a huge salary.
But what concerns us most is not Mr. Meany's financial status; what bothers us is that the alternative to coexistence is as someone said, NO existence. The fact is that either we coexist or we fight; and international fighting these days can be mighty dangerous, even if you are not in the battle. H-bombs don't respect even the unborn.

Speaking of boats, Archie Kaario has sold his "Hanna S" (gillnetter-troller) to Leo Sua, who has been after her for quite a time. Archie is now without a vessel but expects to be back in business by the time gillnet-ting starts. He has ordered a new large gillnetter from Don Puska of Albion Boat Works.

Inar (Bing) Jager of Bella Bella suffered a stroke of bad luck when he shot himself in the left shoulder while cleaning his gun. Bing, who owns the troller "Virgo B," dropped the gun, it discharged and seriously wounded him in the shoulder. He underwent surgery in the Ocean Falls Hospital and we all hope he will have a swift recovery. He was out hand logging with Kal Kaisla when the accident occurred. Local members are considering action to assist him. The report of the accident was sent to Carl Liden by Al Newman of Bella Bella Local.

There's money in the fish business. At least, thieves who broke in to Vancouver Shell Fish and Fish at the foot of Campbell Avenue did fairly well early this month. They chopped a hole in the safe and walked away about $200 richer than when they entered the premises.
