Close Call for Skihper When 'Sea Hawk' Sinks
Captain Bill Duprey of the packer "Sea Hawk 1" figures he's pretty lucky to be alive after his ship sank in the chill waters of Johnstone Straits early in the morning of last Wednesday. And the fact that he is can be laid to his rescuers and Alert Bay Hospital doctors who gradually brought him back almost from the dead.
It was one o'clock on the morning of August 14 when the 50-foot vessel, proceeding at nine knots off Cracroft Island on her way to Growler Cove, ripped into what Captain Duprey believes was a deadhead. He went out
that often decide matters, Harry Thomas of the "Camp Point," a former RCAF medical officer, was on hand and he tpok charge, ripping off Bill's clothing and' proceeding with artificial respiration in an effort to revive the unconscious' man.
CAPT. WM. DUPREY • A lot of people are responsible for Bill Duprey being alive today and he offers his sincere thanks to the crews of the "Skeena M 2," the "Camp Point," and the "Winnifred C," and to all those members of the Union and Native Brotherhood and the RCMP who helped in his rescue. He wishes too to extend his appreciation to Harry Thomas and the doctors at Alert • Bay Hospital who brought him back to the land of the living.
He was rushed to Alert Bay on deck immediately after the . Hospital and it was finally about

collision and found the stern already beginning to settle.
There was no time to lose. The skipper roused his deckhand, 19-year-old Robert King, UBC Physical Ed student who is1 a crack swimmer and told him to get ashore and attract attention as soon as a boat went by. Capt. Duprey knew that the. "Skeena M 2" was only about 20 minutes behind and on the same course.
Bill himself donned "his life-jacket and leaped into the water as the vessel seemed to "just disintegrate."
The water didn't bother the 56-year-old seaman for the first few minutes but after he'd been. in about 10 minutes, Captain Duprey says he just passed out. The next thing he remembers was the voices' of the doctors some three hours later as he lay in bed at the Alert Bay Hospital.
A number of events had transpired during the intervening three hours. Crewman Bob King managed to make shore all right and he too began to feel the after-effects of his midnight swim, but recovered quite rapidly.
He was on the beach about 45 minutes before the "Skeena M 2" came along and heard his shouts. It was just about 2:10 a.m. when the vessel located Captain Duprey and took him aboard.

A NAME TO REMEMBER IN FISHING TACKLE Vancouver, B.C.
Here's Query Thrown at Joe
I asked for ideas and comments from the fishermen, and. believe me, I got both.
One comment was ■— and I'm quoting—"Why should the seine boats have first crack at the fish out in the Straits?
"Why can't it be set up So the gillnet fleet starts Sunday night one week and the seine boats start Monday morning. The following week the seine boats could start Monday morning and the gillnet boats Monday night. That way each gear would have crack at the .fish without the schools being broken up."
I'll pass this along for further comments, as I think there is good cause for a lot of thinking and discussion on the gillnetters' part. WINJO
4 a.m. that what had been only the faintest of heart beats began to grow strong.
Doctors at Alert Bay Hospital told the tenderman that the treatment applied by Thomas vtras undoubtedly instrumental in saving his life.
"You can say I was literally brought back from the dead," Bill told The Fisherman.
Captain Duprey is now at, his hbme in Vancouver "feeling fine" but still under observation. His doctor has said there is nothing wrong with him mechanically or organically, but what he needs' for the present is plenty of rest.
Bill, who has been on the "Sea Hawk 1" for some years now, expects to be out on a replacement in the next week or so.
He has been packing "for Canadian Fish since he came into the B.C. fishing industry while the war was' on. He joined the Union at the same time.
He mentioned that during his years in the fishing industry, both here and earlier in Nova Scotia and the eastern United States, he has worked for only one company. On the east coast it was New England and here, of course, Canadian Fish. He has' also been on towboats and in the Navy.
Though we didn't ask Bill, we're pretty sure that with all his years on the water, this must rank as the closest call he's' ever had and ever wants to experience.
