Fishing Industry Mourns Old-Time Union Builder
Another of the fine old-timers who helped fashion the United Fishermen and Allied Workers' Union has passed away in the person of John McKay, vice-president of the Union's Gibsons Local.
He died at 9:?0 on the morning of Christmas day following an illness of several months which he knew was incurable.
John McKay was born in Caithness, Scotland, in 1894, coming directly to Eritish Columbia with his family at 13 years of age.
In fact, his family and that of George Miller, former UFAWU president, came to Canada together from County Caithness, a fishing and farming area of North Scotland. Both families settled in Vancouver's English Bay area.
John McKay started in the fishing industry at the age of 17, gill-netting salmon for many, many years, mainly in Rivers and Smiths Inlets.
At one stage wi his fishing career, John gillnetted herring out of Pender Harbor and Gibsons.
He was in the '32 and '35 strikes at Rivers Inlet and was an active worker in these important events. In fact, all through his years in the fishing industry, John McKay was a solid, respected trade unionist who helped carry out the job of building the organisation of fishermen and shoreworkers.
In 1944, he moved ashore as a netman, first at Richmond for Todds, then at Oceanic for Can-fisco, Claxton for B.C. Packers and
since 1948, at Cassiar as net boss.
John never ceased thinking of the Union, talking union to such visitors as Alex Gordon just a few weeks before his death. In spite of his illness, he contributed his little something to the fund for his old friend George Miller.
He leaves a son Doug McKay, who is also a netman employed at Phoenix netloft. Like his father, he is an active member of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers. He is on the executive of Steveston Shoreworkers Local, serving on committees and playing his part in organisational work.
His wife Loretta (Lou), is also left to survive John McKay asjs a daughter Mrs. Sullivan of Vancouver.
Three brothers also mourn his passing, Dave McKay also of Gibsons and still a fisherman; Alex McKay, retired and living at Van-anda and Don McKay, who is employed at Gordon and Belyea.
Many friends attended funeral services on Saturday, Dec. 28, to pay their final respects to the old-timer.
Cremation followed and the ashes were cast on the waters off Cape Roger Curtis on Bowen Island by his son Doug and Doug's uncle, Tracy Harris, himself a gillnetter.

Bill Husband of Ladner was drowned but Alf Aunli of Sunbury managed to make his way ashore when the vessel went down.
The men were fishing dogfish when a sudden storm blew up, forcing them to take to the dinghy when the "Scott Isle 2," owned by Lars Aunli, capsized and sank. The dinghy also filled, throwing the men into the sea. Alfred Aunli, reportedly a strong swimmer, ma*de his way to shore but reported that Husband disappeared almost immediately. Despite an extensive search by an RCMP launch, no trace of the body wasr« found.
Bill Husband, despite being only 38 years old was a long-time fisherman. He joined the Union in 1941 and during the intervening-years, was an active member of the organisation. '
He moved to Ladner from Sunbury only recently and had been a member of the Sunbury Local for 16 years. Alfred Aunli, -a brother-in-law of the drowning victim, is a member of the same local.
Bill Husband, whose passing will be keenly felt by his many friends, is survived by his wife and two daughters, Barbara, 16 and Jeannette, 11, who live with their mother in Ladner.
