Bowling Notes
Players Hit the Low Spots
By ENID ERIKSEN
This was certainly not a record breaking week for the UFAWU bowlers, unless it was for low scores. It looks as if the holiday didn't agree with our league or perhaps it was the turkey.
Only five bowlers got into the 600 bracket: Dot Eckman 660, Bob West 639, Al Eck-m a n 606, Jack Cook 605, Len Anderson 601.
Single games over 230 included: Bob West 292, Harold Cox and Len Anderson 261, Dot Eckman 248 and 241,
Helen Huntingdon 249, Myrtle Arter 248, Carrie Ironside 243, Marion Neufeld 232, Jack Cook 233, Wilf Baker, 237, Al Eckman 233.
Squids took four points from Sockeyes, Sharks took four points from Cohos, Seals took three poin's from the Dogfish and Springs and Chums split.
High team score Sharks 3011 and the single team game Sharks 1052.

Trawl net fishing opens this Friday, October 14, in a number of Vancouver Island east coast areas, following the practice established in previous years of opening these areas to permit the Biological Station at Nanaimo to study catches. The opening is also designed to assure continuity of flatfish supplies to local markets on a year round basis.
Announcing the opening, Pacific area fisheries director W. R. Hour-ston said that an earlier closure than that set for the Union Bay area might be anticipated in an effort to restore lemon sole stocks to a higher level. Actual date of the closure will be determined by catches made in the first few days.
Following is a list of opening dates by areas, which are unchanged from last year:
• Baynes Sound—Ballenas Island — Opening period, October 14 to March 20.
• Union Bay—opening period, October 14 to December 16.
• Cape Lazo—opening period, October 14 to February 15.

Tenders Ask For Proper Signalling
Failure of some fishermen using the north arm of the Fra-ser River to use proper signals or otherwise notify bridge tenders of their intention to proceed through has brought complaints from tenders during the past month, UFAWU organiser Harold Wilcox informed The Fisherman this week.
"There's no complaint from the' tenders about opening the bridges," said Wilcox, "but it is reasonable to expect that fishermen will use the proper signals and group together so that a number of boats will pass through at one opening."
Wilcox pointed out that all bridges have radiophones and are standing by on 2182 kes for calls to open the bridges. Fishermen who have no phones can request a bridge opening by blowing the following signals: Eburne No. 5—3 long Middle Arm—4 long, 1 short BC Electric—4 long, 2 short Fraser Avenue, 4 long, 1 short CNR Bridge—3 long Twigg Island Railway Bridge —4 long.
