Nova Scotia Miners Protest
A.V.Roe Closes Rich Mine, Imports Coal From US
An appeal for concerted pressure on the Diefenbaker government to halt a trend that spells tragedy for Canadian coal miners and ruin for the Canadian coal industry is being circulated to trade unions across the country by United Mine Workers' Local 4530 at Glace Bay, NS.
Spurring the Union's campaign is the announcement by Albert E. Fairley, US president of A. V. Roe Corporation's holdings in Canada, that the big Caledonia mine will be closed next month, to be followed soon by shutting down of two other mines.
As related by the Union in its leaflet, The Caledonia Story, the projected closure provides still another illustration of how this country's economy is being strangled by US monopoly domination.
Pointing out that Caledonia is one of the best operating and producing mines in Nova Scotia, the leaflet charges A. V. Roe Corporation with "deliberate and wilful violation of the trust and faith of the Canadian people . . ." MILLIONS IN AID
It continues: "This company, immediately upon gaining control of steel and coal in Nova
Scotia, sought and received millions of dollars in government financial assistance to the industry, irt order to mechanise their mines and bring them up to peak production. "Caledonia colliery has been undergoing an extensive development program which includes the entire west side of the mine. Deeps, levels and headways have all been arch-boomed, as well as all roadways relaid.
"Many other additional improvements have been made, all at great expense in preparation for hoisting the best grade of coal the company has yet produced—when suddenly the company announced that it will close Caledonia mine on January 14, 1961.
"Caledonia Local charges the A. V. Roe Corporation with breaking faith with Canada and its people, thus throwing thou-
sands of Canadian miners on the streets, while it imports millions of tons of American coal across the border through its Dosco owned subsidiary, the Dominion Import Company."
KEEP MINE OPERATING
The Union appeals to all unionists to write or wire the federal government "to keep Caledonia colliery operating—with or without the A. V. Roe ownership."
"Canada is the only country in the world today which imports foreign coal while its miners stand idle for want of orders, and with unlimited coal resources in Nova Scotia," it declares, asking:
"Are Canadians going to stand by and permit American coal to take over our markets, while Canadian miners are added to unemployed ranks and millions of tons of American coal pour across the border?"
Island Jobless Hit Foreclosures
Demand that the Bennett government act by order in council to halt what was described as "a mounting wave if repossessions and t'ore-losures" was made by a meet-ng of some 100 unemployed /om Campbell River, Courte-'■»v and Cumberland districts held at Campbell River No-. ciiioei'
The meeting, which was sponsored by the newly formed BC Federation of Unemployed, called for an immediate moratorium on debt payments by unemployed and increased social assistance payments.
SEASON'S GREETINGS
Provincial Parks Prove Popular
The people of BC are making full use of their provincial parks, judging by figures just released by the provincial department of recreation and conservation. Three in every four visitors to provincial parks this year were residents in this province.
The total of 3,100,000 visits represented a 15 percent increase over 1959, with 70 percent of the visits to Lower Mainland and Island parks. Overnight campers accounted for one fifth of all visits.
