US Invests Heavily In Canada
United States investments in Canada constitute one third of all US foreign investments and are greater than in all Latin American countries combined, a survey made by the US commerce department discloses.
The survey, the first comprehensive review of US foreign investments to be made by a US government department, shows that investments in this country now total $10.2 billion as compared with $8.2 billion in Latin America.
Total of US foreign investments in 1959 is given as $30 billion, little short of a threefold increase from the estimated $11 billion in 1950, but this figure, in the opinion of Labor Research Association, is an underestimation.
"It must always be remembered that the official statistics on direct foreign investments, as reported, are underestimated by as much as 50 percent," the Association points out. "Thus the actual figure for 1959 might well equal $60 billion, and the actual increase during the year might be around $5 billion."
Although the largest US foreign investment is in Canada, followed by Latin America, the fastest rate of increase is in western Europe. There US investment increased 16 percent in 1959, particularly in West Germany, which is now second only to Britain as a choice for US investment.
