BABCOCK
.lis application have already been
refunded to him.
Charge laid against Babcock was that he "fished during the 1959 salmon strike and acted in a manner injurious to the welfare of the Union and its membership."
At the trial on April 29, Babcock asserted he had been a union man since 1922 and his actions during the 1959 strike, which he did not consider to have harmed the Union, were a "matter of principle." He did not think the Union had any right to tie up trollers who were members oi the Pacific Trollers Association and enforce its decisions on non-union members.
However, he conceded as "obvious" the point that plumbers and other building trades workers were obligated by union principle to honor a carpenters' strike in which they had no direct voice, when this analogy was drawn by a committee member.
Recommendations of the trial committee were:
"That Wilfred Babcock be required to apologise for his actions in fishing during the 1959 salmon strike. This apology shall also state his intention to abide by Union rules and decisions in the future.
"That we recommend that a fine of $100 be imposed on Wilfred Babcock and this fine must be paid either by cash or by voucher before he is allowed clearance on any Union vessel.
"That we recognise the rights of Wilfred Babcock to appeal these decisions as outlined under sections 11, 12 and 13 of article 14 of the UFAWU constitution." The recommendations were signed by Harry Allison, chairman; Wally Paulik, secretary; John Person, Don Cox and Joe Jacobs, members of the committee; all are members of the Union's general executive board.
Reflections In Hospital
Editor, The Fisherman:
A few words at this time to express my gratitude to our union for the beautiful flowers which grace the table in my ward. The\ are a constant reminder that whei one is in distress, "there are friends who care."
Flowers are indeed enchantin; and have a delightfully reassur n. way of saying, "Cheer up, o.d mai. fair weather ahead." There are times when one is confronteu wn the responsibility of taking sto i. This I find is one of those times.
First, I must admit that 1 hav been careless in visiting others who were in hospitals and wh< were sicker than 1 am at thv. moment. Now when visitors cai the realisation is borne home—. owe a tremendous debt, one which will require careful attention in the future.
Staff members in the hospital are wonderful people who are daily proving worthy of the trust we place in them. My doctors, when they call and show sincere concern for my welfare, derno -strate loyalty to one of man's most noble professions.
I cannot fail to note that there is a violent contradiction in our way of life. On one hand there is the treachery of the unworthy v..»" seek to destroy life while on the other, there are the healing hands of those who are inspired to sustain life, who are dedicated to humanity.
It is my great wish that those who have shown concern for my wellbeing shall know that their kindness is deeply appreciated and that the days which lie just ahead will be brighter on account of their thoughtfulness.
HAROLD (Butch) MALYEA Cll, Heather Pavilion, Vancouver General Hospital.

Leukemia Takes Life
The death of W. A. C. (Cam) "Vawford, May 6, has saddened a wide circle of friends both in the commercial and sports sections of the British Columbia fishing industry.
Crawford, 44 and a resident of Campbell River, was a victim of leukemia.
He had fished commercially since 1954, spending the past two seasons as a crewman on the seiner Western Warrior.
Captain John Watson, who expressed keen personal regret over Crawford's death, said he was well liked in the fleet. He fished through the past herring season and shortly afterward went into hospital.
Watson described him as a "very able sport fisherman and guide at Campbell River." He had many friends in the sport fishing fraternity.
Death followed a month in hospital for the member of the Union's Quathiaski Cove Local.
Campbell Crawford leaves to survive him his wife Lois, two stepsons, Kenneth and Garth, and a daughter, Cheryl, 17 months.
FISHERMEN
STACMAC is moving fast—Several camps and stores have sold out several times.
The revolutionary bait essence that disperses the slick of school-feed and attracts salmon to the gear. It is 'thumbed' lightly on existing lures. When you think of a good stake think of STACMAC, the two are inseparable. STACMAC is derived from the word STAKEMAKER, the more easily to make it remembered. Look for the STACMAC LABEL, the sign of the double catch. Ask for STACMAC the STAKEMAKER, the fisherman's ALLAD-DIN'S THUMB.
. V T
No tests have been carried out with gillnetters. But a veteran gillnetter has taken a plentiful supply with him for experimental purposes. He is not a peddlar of baloney. He is going to puncture the cans and affix them to various parts of the net. Sometimes to the lead line — sometimes to the mesh. Whether his report be favorable or adverse we shall publish it. We, ourselves, hardly think it will be spectacularly successful with this type of gear unless he can find some way of slowing down the emulsion and dispersal. But at least it is worth a try.
Obtainable at the camps of Tulloch Western, McCallum's, B.C. Packers, Blaine Myers, also at Pallister's camp, Ostrom's Machine shop, Bamfield, Ivan Clark & Sons, Hot Spring Cove and Ahousat, Steveston Hardware, North Shore Martin Marine, Albert's Marina at Horseshoe Bay.
