they do not want to take any action "that would disturb relations with the Canadian labor movement."
The minister said his government definitely preferred to export crude sugar, and in fact there was a "gentlemen's agreement" of long standing between the Cuban sugar industry and Canadian sugar refiners that a minimum amount of Cuban raw sugar would be imported on the understanding that Cuba would not sell the refined sugar in Canada.
TRADE JEOPARDISED
Mora warned that the drastic slash in crude sugar imports by Canadian refineries "places in grave danger Cuba's ability to continue buying Canadian products." During the first four months of this year, he revealed, Cuba bought $18,145,143 in goods from Canada but Canada imported only $1,613,643 in goods from Cuba.
"But Cuba wants to buy still more Canadian products — very

SASK. FISHERY CO-OPS UNITE
Fourteen local fishermen's cooperatives in Saskatchewan now have their own central marketing organisation, Cooperative Fisheries Limited, established as a cooperative undertaking to replace the former government fish marketing service.
Recently it reported substantial increases both in total volume of fish and fish products handled, and in dollar sales.
Majority of members of the fishermen's co-ops are Cree and Chip-pewan Indians and Metis in the northern settlements of the province.

Salmon Farming On Alaska Streams
Legislation to legislate private salmon hatcheries on barren streams within the state is now reportedly under consideration in Alaska.
Salmon farms would be limited to streams where no salmon have spawned for the previous 10 years and their owners or operators would have exclusive rights to fish the waters within 900 feet of the entrance to the hatchery.
The state fish and game board would have discretionary power to extend this distance under special circumstances.

I much more," Mora told LeBour-dais.
It was only because of the re-| fusal of Canadian refiners to buy : crude sugar that Cuba started
looking for ways of selling white
sugar.
But he denied that Cuba cut its prices in order to make the deal. The world refined sugar price is now less than $3 per 100 pounds, he said, asserting that huge quantities are being offered at $2.60 per 100 pounds.
In spite of this situation, Cuba is selling refined sugar to Canadian importers at $5.30 per 100 pounds. This plus the duty of $1.90 per 100 pounds brings the price to Canadian importers to $7.20 US, nearly $7.50 Canadian.
PRICE NOT REAL REASON
"It is quite evident that the price being charged is not the real reason for the attempt to stir up opposition in Canada," he said. "If the refineries want to keep white Cuban sugar off the Canadian market, they should start importing Cuban crude. This would be in the best interests of the workers in the Canadian sugar refining industry.
"In the final analysis," the Cuban minister stated, "Cuban purchases of Canadian products must be paid for with money received in payment for Cuban exports.
"The trade relations between our two countries can be of advantage to each of us if we recognise it has to flow both ways."
LeBourdais, who will be returning to Cuba this weekend with his wife, was enthusiastic over what he had seen in his four day visit.
GREETINGS TO NEW PARTY
He brought back a special message of greetings from the Cuban Labor Congress to delegates attending the founding convention of the New Party.
While it was not read to the convention, it was reported on by convention co-secretary Carl Hamilton along with messages from a number of organisations in other parts of the world. Delegates greeted the reference to the Cuban message with a burst of applause.
LeBourdais is one of a five man trade union delegation from BC invited to participate in the country's July 26 celebrations and to see the country. Practically all countries were represented, with big delegations from many of the Latin American countries, including Brazil with 77 and Guatemala with 17.
"The Cubans have found a new life — their' kids have a chance to get an education, they can buy shoes, swim in pools previously restricted to the wealthy, and live in decent homes. They're not going to give it up," LeBourdais is convinced.

Salmon Start For Greenland
A new commercial salmon fishery has been established in Greenland from the planting of Atlantic salmon spawn a few years ago.
Although still very small, the 1960 catch of 60 tons was double the 1959 catch. With the exception of 90,000 pounds of frozen salmon exported to the US, the catch was frozen or salted and shipped to Denmark.
For the past 10 years, Denmark's own Atlantic salmon catch, most of it from the Baltic, has been around 1,000 tons a year. Sweden, Finland, West Germany and Switzerland are Denmark's best customers for fresh salmon and France is the largest buyer of frozen salmon.

CUC Establishes Control Over Use of Word Co-op'
Only enterprises recognised by the Cooperative Union of Canada as conforming to true cooperative principles will be able to use the word "Co-op" in describing their services as a result of a registration granted by the registrar of trade marks at Ottawa last month.
CUC officials pointed out that the word "Co-op" can be used in three ways — in the name of an association, on a product or in describing a service, such as a co-op apartment, co-op garage or co-op trucking service.
The certificate of registration granted to the CUC on July 14 following publication of its application in the Trade Marks Journal on June 7 applies only to services.
Among the extensive range of services covered by the registration are transportation and garaging, housing, construction, warehousing and publishing. No service in these and other industries listed in the certificate of registration will be able to use the word "Co-op" unless it is recognised as being genuinely cooperative by the CUC.
"It is our intention to protect the word 'Co-op' from improper use," R. S. Staples, CUC president, states. "In future we shall see to it that only those organisations which operate according to recognised cooperative principles will be permitted to use it."

SOME FISH NEEDS SALE
British fish dealers have been warned by W. F. M. Vane, parliamentary secretary to the minister of agriculture and fisheries, that they must be prepared to handle some kinds of fish for which there has been little sale in the past.
Speaking to the National Federation of Inland Wholesale Fish Merchants in London last month, Vane said the fishing fleet might be forced to place larger quantities of such fish on the market.
"Your demands to the fishing industry, I know, are ultimately decided by the demands of the consumer, but I am sure it is not beyond your ability to influence the pattern of your demand," Vane said.
"The consumer can be educated to appreciate the qualities of varieties of good fish which they may have been reluctant to buy in the past. If scampi, why not red fish with or without an Italian name?"
of 1957 by approximately 50 boats. The average weight of sockeye for the week ending July 29 was six pounds, considerably greater than that anticipated prior to the season opening. Pink salmon caught to date are likewise above average in size (six pounds) reflecting exceptional growth conditions for both sockeye and pink salmon during their maturing period.
Sockeye of the same population were below average size in their third year.
PINK CATCHES IMPROVE
Pink catches at Bonilla Point and in US convention waters, the bulletin points out, are larger than those taken in these waters over the past quarter century. It states:
Daily pink salmon catches by the net fishery at Bonilla Point and in United States waters averaged from 18,000 to 25,000 daily in each area. These catches, while not numerically important, are substantially greater than the pink
'Wildlife Review' Wins Merit Award
A special award of merit for its contribution to conservation education in North America has been made to Wildlife Review, published by the fish and game branch of the department of recreation and conservation.
In announcing receipt of the award, conservation minister Earle C. Westwood said the award was made by the American Association for Conservation Information at its annual convention in Sylvan Lake, South Dakota.
The publication, edited by W. T. Ward of Vancouver, is published three times annually with a circulation of more than 40,000 throughout the world.
salmon catches for these areas on similar dates during any year for at least the past 26 years.
Most of the pink salmon being taken currently are destined for Canadian spawning areas north of the Fraser with smaller numbers originating in the Nooksack and Dungeness Rivers in the stale of Washington.
Large escapements to these areas due to a strike of Canadian fishermen in 1959 combined with an anticipated very high sea survival appears responsible for the unusual large size of the run to these areas.
Current catches of pink salmon have no relation to the abundance of Fraser River pink salmon which will not appear in the fishery in any volume until about August 14.
