Steel Raiders Fail to Deliver
Last month, at a Steelworkers' conference in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canadian president Larry Sefton described the Steelworkers' raid on Mine Mill at Sudbury as the "outstanding event" of the year for the Steelworkers Union.
In the light of more recent developments, it is doubtful if this view would be shared by workers at International Nickel's Sudbury operations, for whom the Steelworkers Union holds the bargaining rights by a narrow and still disputed majority vote. '
At the Sault Ste. Marie conference, the Steelworkers Union declared war on what it termed "weak, ineffective and reactionary unions." In effect, it placed on its list of unions to be raided the United Mine Workers, the Ironworkers, the Confederation of National Trade Unions, the Moulders and any other union engaged in working or handling metals.
In his report to the conference, Sefton said that the Steelworkers "must organise 'like mad' merely to hold our own against the heavy inroads that job losses have made in our membership numbers."
He also noted that "for some years now, a number of areas have not added a new plant to our roster."
Placed against the Steelworkers' failure to organise the unorganised in the steel industry itself and protect the jobs of its members, these statements point to an in-
tensification of raids against other unions.
Last week, at 3 u d b u r y , Inco workers were given an indication of where this destructive policy of union raiding has led them.
On the same day that the Steelworkers opened negotiations with Inco at Toronto, settlement of their negotiations at Sherritt Gordon's Lynn Lake operations in northern Manitoba was announced. The settlement was for less than Inco had already offered, far short of Inco workers' demands.
Mine Mill, which defeated a Steelworkers' raid to retain certification at Falconbridge, termed the settlement "a shameful piece of business."
Ken Smith, Mine Mill national president, said there was no doubt that at Falconbridge "the company will seek to hide behind the Lynn Lake settlement and Inco will do the same.
"Nothing," he added, "could have been more carefully calculated to kill any fighting spirit even among the Steelworkers' own supporters than this announcement that they had settled at Lynn Lake for less than was already on the table before the talks between the Steelworkers and Inco opened.
"Let me say that at Falconbridge we are determined to continue the struggle for the gains our members have been denied so long by the disruptive actions of the Steel raiders."

Heart Attack Claims Veteran City Fisherman
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
COMPANIES PULL
It provides that to qualify, workers must be on the seniority list which in turn means they must be regular employees. The Association says that some would receive "statutory pay for holidays when . . . not even on a company payroll." This is true in any fair statutory pay plan as long as the other conditions are met. Canners have been in the practice of deliberately disqualifying workers by laying them off prior to statutory holidays.
PENSION PUFF
Canners in their pre-strike vote bulletin said individual companies will have in their pension plans "contingent vesting of 10 percent of the company's contribution in the eleventh year after enrolment with equal and progressive annual increases until full vesting is reached after 20 years."
Union business agent Alex Gordon described that statement as meaning "absolutely nothing."
The Trade Union Research Bureau has examined the pensions as they stand and on the basis of employee contributions and what is finally paid as a pension, has expressed the opinion that companies are paying nothing into pension plans. The workers are financing their own pensions out of their contributions.
The company propaganda "insults the intelligence of all shore-workers," Gordon declared.
"The Association attitude is archaic and contemptuous and completely unacceptable."
Death closed the 30 year fishing career of William (Bill) Markle on July 3 when the veteran halibut, salmon and herring fisherman succumbed to a heart attack at his home in Vancouver. He was 62 years of age.
Born at Woodstock, Ontario, William Leopold Markle had worked on halibut vessels and salmon and herring seiners, the greater part of the time as a cook, since he entered the fishing industry in the mid-thirties.
He fished salmon last season with Jerry Dal Secco on the Tiber, but an earlier heart attack this spring
compelled him to abandon his plans to go fishing this year.
Bill Markle was a staunch member of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union, which he joined in 1944, and at the time of his death was attached to its Vancouver Fishermen's Local.
A single man, he had no relatives in this province but is survived by one brother and four sisters in Ontario.
Funeral services under auspices of AF and AM Fellowship Lodge No. 137 were held from Bell Funeral Home on July 8, followed by interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
