'Royal City' Best Equipped Combination Vessel in Fleet
The steadily growing British Columbia fleet of combination longline-seine vessels has a new queen ship, Capt. Emil Jensen's Royal City, launched from Star Shipyard in New Westminster on August 1.
During the past four years, half a dozen new combination vessels of 70 feet and over have been launched from lower mainland yards. Some have embodied more innovations than others, but all have been designed and equipped to meet the changing needs of the fishing industry.
Three of the new vessels hit the water in February 1960 — Capt. Bill Logan's 78 foot Dominator, built by Benson Bros.; Capt. Edgar Arnet's 75 foot Attu, built by Allied Builders, and the 77 foot Caamano Sound, built by Star Shipyard for T. Nakamoto.
They were followed in March 1960 by Capt. Bob Karliner's 79 foot Pacific Harvester, built by Benson Bros., and in March 1962 by Capt. Odd Tungehaug's 69 foot Carina 1, built by Mel Sather.
For a little more than two months this year, the 91 foot Milbanke Sound, built by Benson Bros, for Capt. Bill Wachsmuth and his partner, Arthur Nakamoto, and launched at Coal Harbor on May 25, was the undisputed queen of the fleet.
Now the title goes to the Royal City, a sister ship to the Milbanke Sound but more completely equipped for her versatile role as long-liner, seiner or dragger.
SUPERBLY EQUIPPED
Dimensions of the Royal City are almost identical with those of the Milbanke Sound — overall length 90 feet six inches, molded

breadth 24 feet six inches, molded depth 12 feet eight inches.
Like the Milbanke Sound, she is of all welded steel construction with steel and aluminum superstructure, and her architect, William Reid, has followed the basic lines of his design for the Milbanke Sound in her raked stem and seine-boat stern, her big wheelhouse and wide bridge deck.
The difference between the two vessels is in the special features of the Royal City and the equipment which makes her the most superbly outfitted fishing vessel on the coast.
One such feature is the rolling chocks installed on the advice of hydrodynamic consultant Gunnar Stennerson, who maintained that they would not slow the vessel's speed. Stennerson's point was proved when the Royal City did a smooth 11.75 knot average speed, compared with the 11.7 knot average of the Milbanke Sound, in trial runs.
SHAFT TUNNEL
Another feature is the centre line A frame shaft tunnel which runs the entire length of the shaft from the engine room to the stern couplings, giving the engineer ready access both to the shaft and the piping for the refrigeration system. The shaft tunnel provides full headroom and allows work to be done whether or not the vessel is carrying a full load of fish.
For the Royal City, a full load is 250,000 pounds of halibut or 220 tons of herring.
The shaft tunnel also contributes to the vessel's seaworthiness, making her virtually unsinkable, in Reid's opinion. Bilges have been eliminated to provide maximum space for the four heavily lined fishwells and there are no bilge pumps.
But flooding of the tunnel would not even alter the trim of the vessel, and the big pumps incorporated into the refrigeration system can
handle 1,000 gallons of water a minute and are more than adequate to keep the vessel afloat should her steel hull and eight inch hold linings be holed.
At the same time, the divided hold enables the skipper to trim ship by flooding the wells.
CATERPILLAR POWERED
The Royal City is an all-Caterpillar powered vessel. Her main engine is a turbocharged and after-cooled four cycle, eight cylinder Caterpillar D379 producing 500 hp at 1,225 rpm, the first of its kind to be installed in a BC fishing vessel.
Its particular advantage is that it is compact, developing more power in less space with less weight, gives efficient fuel consumption and is easily maintained.
Everything, or almost everything, on the Royal City is powered electrically. Power is supplied by two Caterpillar diesel generating units, a turbocharged and aftercooled D330 developing 100 hp for a 50 kw generator and a turbocharged 87 hp unit powering a 40 kw generator.
The system is a straight 120-208 volt AC three phase system for the ship's electric panel heating system, refrigeration system, pumps and winches. Other electrical equipment, radar, sounders and phones, is all 110 volt.
Features of the gear, a Caterpillar 3181, are full drive power for forward or reverse, hydraulically actuated identical forward and reverse clutches, helical drive gears and independent pressure lubrication.
The propeller, a four bladed 74 by 50 Osborne, was supplied by Propeller Repair Shop.
COMBINATION WINCH
Wagner Engineering supplied the two station hydraulically operated Wagner T15 steering and Sperry Gyroscope Canada Ltd. supplied the Sperry London Magnetic Compass automatic pilot system.
Anchor winch, vanging winch, topping winch, puretic power block and combination hydraulic winch for salmon and herring seining, trawling and longlining were all supplied by J. Swann Ltd.
Pumps and Power Ltd. supplied 10 Paramount pumps for the Royal City's powerful pumping system, heavy duty, motor driven — the motors have specially treated windings to resist corrosion — horizontal and vertical units for general service, brine circulation, condenser service and fuel oil.transfer.
What justifies the Royal City's claim to be the most completely outfitted combination fishing vessel now in service on this coast is her multi-purpose refrigeration system, supplied and installed by General Refrigeration and Engineering of Vancouver at a cost of $35,000.
REFRIGERATION SYSTEM
A basic chilled brine system, it can be used for spray freezing, blast air freezing and holding, flooded brine or any of these three methods in combination.
Equipment consists of a Freon compressor, which has a 40 ton capacity at 20 F and 80 F condensing; Freon gas drier and receiver; Freon shell and tube type gas condenser, and a one inch condenser centrifugal circulating pump.
The Sea Chiller unit has seven shells, each six inches by 10 inches, and there are two air chiller and circulating fan units, two air chiller condensing units, and a three inch j vertical centrifugal pump rated at 500 gallons a minute at 30 foot head, all units being driven by their own electric motors.
Equipment is housed in the engine room, together with main, auxiliary and ancillary equipment, where it is readily accessible.
Probably the most versatile vessel in the BC fleet, the Royal City
