Computers Move Into Boat Building Field
Now computers are being used to determine the type and design of fishing vessels best fitted for a fishery.
In Norway recently, when a fishing company wanted a vessel designed, such facts as weather conditions at various times of the year, occurrence of fish on the grounds at different seasons, catch results and costs of processing at sea and ashore were fed into a computer.
The conclusion was that the most suitable vessel would be a 500 ton trawler, which would cost slightly more to operate than a 400 trawler but which would compensate for the higher operating cost by a larger volume of catches over the year.
Fourteen of such vessels, it was calculated, would outfish the com-
pany's present fleet of 18 trawlers of various tonnages and 10 long-liners.
According to the computer, the most suitable trawler would be one having a speed of 12 knots, cargo capacity of 116 tons of boxed fish, and tying up 24 hours between trips.
Daily income of each vessel was calculated at 1,814.11 kroner (approximately $277) for fish and 500 kroner (approximately $76) for meal and oil.
The computer even indicated which grounds would be most productive at what seasons.
According to the report, when the computer's findings were checked against available statistics, they were found to be correct.

The seal — a removable strip of plastic covered paper covering the positive terminal — is the purchaser's guarantee of full battery power.
To introduce the new product to the public, Ray-O-Vac has undertaken a massive national advertising campaign on television and in trade magazines, said a spokesman for the company head quartered in Winnipeg.
The seal is the first major change in the battery industry in Canada since 1940 when Ray-O-Vac introduced sealed in steel batteries with a leak proof guarantee.
